Kalighat is the temple the city takes its name from, and it is the busiest religious site in Kolkata. It stands in the south of the city and is counted among the Shakti Pithas, the network of sites bound to the Sati legend, which is what gives it standing far beyond Bengal. The present temple is much younger than the cult attached to the place. Practically, it is a dense, intense, working temple approached through a lane of stalls selling offerings — not a monument to walk around at leisure. Visitors who go expecting a quiet architectural site are usually disappointed; those who go early and treat it as worship rather than sightseeing usually are not.
