Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan
One of the largest aquariums in the world, built around a central tank holding whale sharks. You spiral downward around it for the whole visit.
One tank, seen from every depth
Kaiyukan’s design is unusual and it is what makes the place: you take a lift to the top and walk down a spiral, and the enormous central Pacific Ocean tank stays beside you the whole way, so you see the same water from the surface down to the sea floor. Whale sharks live in it. The route follows the Pacific Rim, tank by tank, and it is genuinely well done rather than merely large. It is the best wet-weather option in Osaka and the best single attraction in the city for younger children.

What to look for
A one-way descending route, so you cannot easily go back — take your time.
