Built on gun batteries

Odaiba began as a set of artificial islands built in the 1850s to hold cannon against foreign warships — daiba means battery — and was redeveloped in the 1990s as a waterfront entertainment district. The result is unashamedly artificial: shopping complexes, a beach that is not for swimming, a small Statue of Liberty replica, and a life-size Gundam that moves on a schedule. What redeems it is the view. Looking back across the bay at the skyline and Rainbow Bridge after dark is the best cityscape in Tokyo.
