The auction, behind glass
Toyosu took over Tsukiji’s wholesale operation in 2018 and is now the largest fish market in the world by volume. The tuna auction still happens at around 5.30 in the morning, and visitors watch it from a gallery — an upper viewing deck through glass, free and unrestricted, or a lower observation tier much closer to the floor, which requires an advance ballot. It is a working facility rather than an attraction, which means it is sterile and efficient where Tsukiji was chaotic. The restaurants upstairs are the compensation.
