When to go to Kazakhstan
The only reliable window for Charyn, the Kolsai lakes and the high Tian Shan. Roads to the lakes are open, days are warm and the steppe is green in May and June. July and August are hottest and busiest.
Cool and quiet, with autumn colour in the mountain valleys in October. Higher roads can close early or open late, so mountain plans need a fallback.
Severe. Astana is among the coldest capitals in the world and the steppe is bitter. Almaty works as a winter city break with skiing at Shymbulak above it, but the lakes and canyon are effectively out.

Kazakhstan entry — no visa, but only fourteen days
Under Decree 464 of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, dated 7 July 2022, Indian citizens may enter visa-free for a continuous stay of up to fourteen days. The Embassy of India in Astana also states a ceiling of forty-two days of visa-free stay within any 180-day period, so repeat visits are counted, not reset. The fourteen days cannot be treated as a starting point for a longer trip: a stay beyond it needs a visa arranged in advance through the appropriate route, which for most categories requires an invitation issued through the Migration Service.
How far ahead There is nothing to apply for and no processing time to plan around — entry is granted at the border on a valid passport. What does need planning is the itinerary: fourteen days is the hard limit on a single visit, and forty-two days is the ceiling across any 180-day period. Confirm the current position with the Kazakh mission before booking, because visa-free arrangements are changed by decree and can change again.
