When to go

When to go to Macau

Best
Oct–Dec
Autumn into early winter

The strongest stretch — drier, cooler and far more comfortable for walking the Historic Centre, which is the way to see it. Humidity drops sharply after the summer and the typhoon season has passed.

Good
Jan–Mar
Winter and early spring

Cool and often grey, occasionally genuinely cold by subtropical standards, and prone to damp fog in late winter. Quiet, and perfectly workable for a city trip. Lunar New Year moves between late January and February and is busy.

Limited
Apr–Sep
Late spring and summer

Hot, very humid and the wettest half of the year, with typhoon season through the late summer. A storm can close ferries and disrupt flights for a day or more. Indoor Macau carries on regardless; walking the peninsula does not.

Macau entry — visa-free for 30 days

Macau is a special administrative region with immigration arrangements separate from mainland China, and the Macao SAR government lists India among the nationalities exempted from a visa. The published entitlement is a maximum stay of 30 days for holders of a valid passport or travel document. That means an ordinary Indian passport holder does not apply for anything in advance — you present your passport at the checkpoint and are admitted. Macau’s immigration authority also operates an "Authorization to Enter and Stay", sometimes described as a visa upon arrival, at the visa room of any checkpoint for travellers who are not exempted; Indian passport holders should not need it, but it exists. A mainland Chinese visa is not a Macau visa and does not admit you to Macau, and equally a Macau entry does not admit you to the mainland — if your trip includes both, they are two separate entry questions.

Thirty days is the ceiling, not the norm Thirty days is the maximum the exemption grants; the officer at the checkpoint decides the authorised stay within it, as at any border. Bring the ordinary evidence of a short visit — return ticket, accommodation, funds — and the question does not arise. The point worth planning around is the separation between Macau and the mainland: they run different immigration systems, so a Hong Kong or mainland itinerary needs its own entry position worked out rather than assumed. We do not publish Macau entry fees or processing times here.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

No. The Macao SAR government lists India among the nationalities exempted from a visa, with a maximum stay of 30 days for holders of a valid passport or travel document. You do not apply for anything in advance — you present your passport at the checkpoint.
No, and the reverse is also true. Macau runs its own immigration system separate from the mainland’s, so a Chinese visa does not admit you to Macau and Macau’s visa-free entitlement does not admit you to mainland China. A trip covering both needs two entry positions settled separately.
Up to 30 days. That is the maximum the exemption permits; the authorised stay is granted at the checkpoint within that ceiling, so carry the ordinary evidence of a short visit — return ticket, accommodation and funds.
Two days covers the UNESCO-inscribed Historic Centre and the A-Ma Temple properly. Three lets you add Taipa and Coloane, which is where the territory stops being dense and starts being a village with hiking trails. Most visitors give it half a day and see only the facade of St Paul’s.
A cuisine in its own right rather than a label — Portuguese technique applied with Southeast Asian, Indian and Chinese ingredients over four centuries of contact. Minchi, African chicken and tacho are the dishes that show it. It exists nowhere else, and it is distinct from the Cantonese food that is Macau’s everyday cooking.
October to December. The summer is hot, very humid and carries typhoon risk that can suspend ferries, and the Historic Centre is something you walk. January to March is cool, quiet and workable if you do not mind grey days.
