Udaipur for a honeymoon: how many nights, when to go and what to book
Planning an Udaipur honeymoon? How many nights to give it, when the lakes look best, what to book first and which day trip suits a couple.
The short answer
Udaipur suits a honeymoon because the whole trip can happen in one place and on the water. Give it three nights if the honeymoon is the whole trip, two if Udaipur is one stop of several. Go between October and March, ideally after a good monsoon so the lakes are full. Choose a lake-facing room only after asking the property about the current lake level, book the sunset boat for your first evening, and treat the island dinner and the day out in the hills as extras you choose, not things to assume.
This guide is about shaping a honeymoon here. If you are still choosing between Rajasthan cities, start with our comparison of Jaipur, Udaipur or Jodhpur and come back.
Why Udaipur works for two
Rajasthan Tourism calls Udaipur "the city of lakes and palaces", set among the green Aravalli hills, with the Lake Palace in the middle of Lake Pichola and the City Palace on its eastern bank. Udaipur's sights are close together, and the evenings on the water are the point, which suits a romantic trip. Our own Udaipur guide calls it the strongest honeymoon city in the state, and that is our view, not a ranking you will find on an official site.
When to go
October to March is the window we recommend. Rajasthan Tourism describes winter, from about October to January, as the best season, with temperatures of roughly 10 to 30 °C across most of the state.
The lakes matter as much as the weather. Pichola and Fateh Sagar are rain-fed, so what you see depends on the monsoon that came before. Our guide puts the fullest water in September and October after a good year, and warns that after a weak monsoon the shoreline can be low and a lake-view room disappoints. Ask the property directly before you pay for one.
The weeks either side of New Year are the most popular and the most expensive, according to our honeymoon itinerary. Book early, or choose January or February.
April to June is hot enough that days shrink to early morning and evening, and our guide says lake levels fall furthest.
July to September is the quiet option: rain, dramatic skies, filling lakes, fewer visitors. It is a trade, not a bargain: the sunset boat is less predictable.
How many nights
Our own pages are not unanimous here. Our Udaipur guide says two nights covers the sights and a third only adds rest; our honeymoon package builds in three. For a honeymoon, we would take the third night: the point is not seeing more, it is not rushing.
| Nights | What it gives you | Fits |
|---|---|---|
| Two | The City Palace, the old city, one boat at sunset and one slow afternoon | Udaipur as one stop in a longer Rajasthan route |
| Three | The same, plus a day out into the hills or a second slow day | A honeymoon that is mostly Udaipur. This is the shape of our [Udaipur Honeymoon](https://livetraveller.in/packages/udaipur-honeymoon-three-nights) itinerary |
| Four or more | A spare evening, which matters for the island dinner (below) | Couples who want to do very little |
A three-night shape
This follows our Udaipur Honeymoon itinerary, which is the basis for the timings below.
Day 1: arrive and get on the water. The airport is about 22 km from the old city, roughly half an hour. Keep the afternoon empty and take the late-afternoon boat from the City Palace jetty on the first evening, so the rest of the stay is spent knowing the shape of the lake.
Day 2: the palace and the ghats, slowly. The City Palace Museum says it is open from 9 am to 9 pm on all seven days, with ticket sales closing at 8 pm, and suggests at least an hour. Our itinerary allows two to three hours. Add the Jagdish temple at its gate, then a rest or the garden of Saheliyon ki Bari. In the evening, the folk-dance performance at Bagore ki Haveli on Gangaur Ghat; check the schedule on the day, as our guide says it changes.
Day 3: one day out, or none. Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur make a full day (see below). If you would rather stay, take the Monsoon Palace for sunset (check the closing time at the gate) and the lakeside at Fateh Sagar.
Day 4: a last lake morning. The airport is close, so a midday flight is comfortable and an evening one leaves the whole day.
The sunset boat
Rajasthan Tourism singles out a boat ride around sunset for the view of the lake and the City Palace, and the boats leave from the City Palace side of Pichola. Our honeymoon package includes a private boat. On a trip you plan yourself, our Udaipur guide says boats are shared and fill at sunset, so book earlier in the afternoon if you want space. We could not find an official boat timetable or price list, so ask at the jetty and at your hotel on the day. If the lake is closed to boats for weather, ask for the ride to move to the next evening.
The island dinner
Jag Mandir is a palace on an island in Pichola, begun in 1620 and finished around 1652, which Rajasthan Tourism says sheltered Prince Khurram, later Shah Jahan, when he rebelled against his father. Our itinerary describes a dinner on the island terrace, reached by the palace launch. It is not included in our package because it is priced per person on the evening and depends on the weather and on the island's own events. Choose it deliberately, and keep one spare evening so it can move if the weather turns. We found no official reservation page, so we arrange it through the hotel or the island management.
The Lake Palace, on its own island nearby, is now a hotel, according to Rajasthan Tourism. You see both islands from the boat either way.
Where to stay
Lake-facing rooms in the old city are why most couples come, and our guide says the premium is real. Confirm the actual view, not the category name.
Fateh Sagar and the resort belt are calmer and better value, but outside the old city.
The old city is car-hostile. Lanes are narrow, and many hotels have no vehicle access to the door, so your bags may be carried the last stretch. Our guide also suggests a torch for the lanes at night.
We do not publish hotel names or rates. The right stay changes with your dates, and we would rather talk it through.
Choosing the day out
Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur is our usual recommendation: the fifteenth-century hill fort with a wall about 36 km long, and a Jain temple of 1439 on 1,444 marble columns. It is a long day (our itinerary counts about five hours of driving), and our pages differ on how far Kumbhalgarh is, from about an hour and a half to two and a half hours from Udaipur. Non-Jain visitors are admitted to Ranakpur from noon, according to our guide and itinerary; we did not confirm that on the temple's own site, so check the current hours.
A gentler day: Eklingji and Nagda, the Mewar temple complexes about forty minutes north, then an afternoon at Fateh Sagar, which Rajasthan Tourism describes as a lake with Nehru Island and an islet observatory.
Chittorgarh, about two hours east, for the largest fort in India, works better as a stop on the road to Jaipur than as a return trip, in our guide's view.
Combining Udaipur with somewhere else
A longer honeymoon: our Royal Cities, Slowly route takes Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur in six nights with two in each, ending on the lake with a private boat. Our package FAQ names a seventh night in Udaipur as the addition to make first.
Udaipur plus desert: our five-night Udaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer route starts with two nights on the lake.
From Jaipur: about six and a half hours by road, according to our guide, so a short trip joining the two spends a day in the car. For the whole state, see our Rajasthan guide and our first-trip Rajasthan itinerary.
Mistakes to avoid
- Booking five cities in six nights for a honeymoon. Most of each day is then the road.
- Paying for a lake-view room without asking about the lake level.
- Leaving the boat to the last evening. Take it first, and keep a spare evening in case weather moves it.
- Assuming a hotel can drive to its door in the old city.
Before you book
Dates and rules change, so confirm these before you travel. We read the City Palace Museum's official visiting page and FAQ and Rajasthan Tourism's Udaipur and best-time pages on 27 October 2026.
- City Palace Museum: hours and ticket-sales closing time are from the museum's own site; its FAQ was last updated on 4 October 2023, so confirm on the day. Online booking is on the museum website.
- Boats: no official timetable found; confirm at the jetty.
- Island dinner, Ranakpur hours, Monsoon Palace hours: not confirmed on official pages; confirm before building a day around them.
- Lake level: ask your hotel for the current level before you commit to a lake-view room.
Frequently asked questions
How many nights should we spend in Udaipur for a honeymoon?
Three if Udaipur is the whole trip; two if it is one stop in a longer route.
When is the best time for an Udaipur honeymoon?
October to March, ideally after a good monsoon. The weeks around New Year are the most popular and the most expensive.
Will the lakes have water?
It depends on the monsoon. After a weak year the shoreline can be low, so ask the property before paying for a lake-view room.
Is the sunset boat guaranteed?
The boat can be booked; the sunset cannot be promised. In winter the light is usually clear, and in the monsoon it is less predictable and sometimes spectacular, according to our itinerary.
Is the Jag Mandir dinner included in your honeymoon package?
No. It is priced per person on the evening and depends on the weather, so we arrange it for the night you choose.
Can we visit in the monsoon?
Yes. Our itinerary calls August and September the quiet option, with full lakes, green hills and room in the hotels, but the sunset is a gamble.
Is Udaipur good for a honeymoon if we want a beach or adventure?
Udaipur has no beach and is not an adventure trip; it is a slow lakeside city. For a different kind of trip, see our honeymoon guide.
