Romantic Getaways

Intimate escapes for two

The idea

The trip you take more than once

This is the trip couples take more than once — the long weekend that is not a milestone and does not need to be. It has a different shape from a honeymoon: shorter, closer, booked with less notice, and judged on whether it actually felt like a break rather than on whether it lived up to anything.

Which means the useful question is not where is most romantic, but what the two of you find restorative. For some couples that is a city with good food and nothing scheduled; for others it is somewhere with no signal and a long walk. The trips that disappoint are usually the ones planned to look right rather than to suit the people taking them.

Kinds

Three versions, and which one you actually want

The city break is the default and the easiest to book late: somewhere walkable, one good dinner, a gallery if you feel like it. The retreat is the opposite — somewhere rural and quiet where the point is that there is nothing to do, which some couples find restorative and others find agitating after a day and a half.

The third is the small journey: a short drive, a train with a view, two nights at each end. It suits couples who like momentum, and it is the version most likely to be remembered as a trip rather than as a stay.

Where

Close enough to be worth it

For Indian travellers the short-haul set does most of the work: Thailand and Indonesia for warmth on a four-night budget of time, the Maldives when the point is to see nobody, and Sri Lanka for hill country and coast in one short trip.

Within India the options are better than they are given credit for — the Western Ghats, Rajasthan in winter, Goa outside the season, the Himalayan foothills — and they remove the flight entirely. For those with a week rather than a weekend, Portugal, Italy and Austria are the European three that reward a short stay without feeling rushed.

Planning

What makes the difference on a short trip

Three nights is the honest minimum, one thing booked is enough, and anything over about three hours of travelling each way starts eating the point of it. Closer and slower beats further and rushed, every time.

The room matters more here than on a longer holiday, because you are in it more of the time. And agreeing when you are both off email is a much easier conversation at home than at the table.

Why choose romantic getaways

Here is what defines it — and why it earns a place on your journey.

🌙
Three nights is the honest minimum

Two nights is one real day once travel is counted. The third is what turns a trip away into a rest.

🍽️
Book one thing, not five

A single good dinner to look forward to does more than a full itinerary, and it leaves the rest of the weekend free to be spent badly on purpose.

Distance is the enemy here

On a short trip, anything over about three hours of travelling each way eats the point of it. Closer and slower beats further and rushed.

How to Make It Yours

Keep the itinerary to two things. One dinner and one thing worth seeing is enough for three nights. What people remember from a trip like this is usually the unplanned part, and it needs somewhere to happen.

Agree about phones before you leave. Deciding when you are both off email is a much easier conversation at home than at the table. On a short break it affects the trip more than the destination does.

The room is more of the trip than usual. On three nights you are in it far more of the time than on a fortnight away. A good bed, a bath and something to look at earn their cost here in a way they might not on a longer holiday.
