Journey highlights

The moments that make this journey unforgettable — the signature experiences we have woven through every day, so the best of the destination is never left to chance.

  • A water villa on stilts with steps straight down into the lagoon
  • Snorkelling the house reef from your own deck rather than from a boat
  • Dinner set out on a private sandbank, with the island lights in the distance
  • A sunset dhoni cruise, with spinner dolphins through most of the year
  • The transfer itself — a speedboat across the atoll or a seaplane above it
  • Four nights, which is the right length when the flight is the only long part
  • Overwater spa treatments, with the lagoon moving under the glass
  • An island small enough to walk around in twenty minutes

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Across the atoll to a villa on stilts with steps straight down into the lagoon. The transfer is the first real moment of the trip — either a speedboat throwing spray across water that changes colour every few hundred metres, or a seaplane low enough that you can see the reefs from above. Nothing is planned for the first evening. The lagoon under the villa is lit after dark at most resorts, and the fish come to it. · Your island · Speedboat or seaplane

Day 2

Snorkelling from your own steps in the morning, which is the whole argument for a water villa — the reef starts within a few metres and the first hour of the day is when it is busiest, before the water has been disturbed. Green and hawksbill turtles are common in the Maldives and reef sharks are harmless and everywhere. The heat of the afternoon is for the spa, or for the shade of the deck, which is what it is there for. · Your island

Day 3

A slow day on the water, with dinner as the fixture. A private sandbank dinner is a table set on a bank of sand that is above water only at certain tides, reached by dhoni, with the resort lights a distance off across the lagoon and nothing else in any direction. It is arranged in advance because it depends on the tide, and it is the one thing on the island genuinely worth paying extra for. · Your island · Dhoni

Day 4

Out on a dhoni in the late afternoon for the sunset cruise. Spinner dolphins are resident across the atolls and travel in groups that can run to a hundred or more, riding the bow wave and doing the spinning leap they are named for — they are seen on most cruises through the year, though nothing in the ocean is guaranteed. The light going down over open water with no land in it is the other half of the reason to go. · Your island · Dhoni

Day 5

The transfer back across the atoll to Malé. Seaplanes operate in daylight only and are scheduled around your international flight, which sometimes means an earlier start than the distance suggests; speedboat transfers are more flexible. Most resorts hold a departure lounge with showers for guests whose flight is in the evening, which is worth confirming when the booking is made rather than on the day. · Your island · Speedboat or seaplane

Good to Know

Frequently asked

It depends on what you want from the room. A water villa gives you direct lagoon access from your own steps, the sound of water under the floor at night, and the glass panel most of them have in the living area. A beach villa usually gives more space, a private garden and shade, and is markedly cooler in the middle of the day. Many couples split the stay between the two, which is easily arranged.
It changes the trip. Speedboat transfers serve resorts within roughly an hour of Malé, run at any hour and cost less. Seaplanes reach the further atolls, fly only in daylight, and the flight itself over the atolls is one of the better things about the Maldives. Seaplanes also have a strict baggage allowance and are weather-dependent. The transfer is determined by which resort you choose rather than the other way round.
It is the fringing reef around the island itself. A resort with a good house reef means you can snorkel straight off the beach or your villa steps at any hour, without booking a boat — turtles, reef sharks and hundreds of fish species, at your own pace. A resort with a poor or distant house reef means every snorkel is an excursion. It is the single most useful question to ask before choosing an island.
The dry north-east monsoon from roughly December to April gives the calmest seas, the clearest water and the most reliable sun, and is the peak season priced accordingly. May to November is the wetter south-west monsoon — rain tends to come in short heavy bursts rather than all day, prices fall considerably, and manta and whale shark activity in some atolls is actually better. A wet fortnight is possible.
For most couples on a single island, yes. There is no sightseeing to work through — the point is the water, the room and stopping. Four nights allows two full days plus arrival and departure afternoons, which is enough to feel the pace change without becoming restless on an island you can walk round in twenty minutes. The seven-night route is for travellers who genuinely want to do nothing for a week.
