Day-by-day itinerary
You are met at Kochi airport and driven to your hotel in the city. The afternoon is given to Fort Kochi and its old quarter — the Jewish synagogue and Jew Town, the Dutch Palace at Mattancherry, St Francis Church, Santa Cruz Basilica and the cantilevered Chinese fishing nets along the waterfront. The evening is free along Marine Drive.
You drive up into the Western Ghats to Munnar, climbing through hairpin bends with tea gardens on the slopes and small waterfalls beside the road. Cheeyappara falls and the plantation viewpoints are the usual stops on the way. Munnar sits high enough that the air changes noticeably by the time you arrive.
A day around Munnar taking in Eravikulam National Park, home to the Nilgiri tahr, and the reservoirs at Mattupetty and Kundala where boating operates on water edged by tea on one side and open grassland on the other. Echo Point and the tea museum complete the circuit. Entrance and boating charges are not included.
You drive to Thekkady, check in, and spend the afternoon at the Periyar wildlife sanctuary — dense evergreen forest declared a tiger reserve in 1978, set around a large lake formed by the Mullaperiyar dam. Cardamom, pepper, tea and coffee plantations surround the town.
You travel to Alleppey, where the hills give way to still water, paddy fields and coconut groves. The canals and the beach are both close to the town, and the day is given to the backwater setting rather than to touring.
You drive south to Kovalam, where the hills give way to the Arabian Sea. The evening is free on the beach — Lighthouse Beach and Hawa Beach are the two main crescents, separated by a headland, and both face west for the sunset.
After breakfast you check out and are driven to Kochi airport in time for your onward flight. Your onward flight is not part of this package, so allow the check-in time your airline requires. If the drive is a long one from your final hotel, the transfer will be timed accordingly.
