Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Met at Kochi airport and driven to Fort Kochi, about ninety minutes. Nothing is scheduled beyond checking in — the first evening is for the seafront, the Chinese fishing nets at sunset and finding dinner nearby. · Kochi · Private airport transfer

Day 2

St Francis Church, where Vasco da Gama was first buried, and the Dutch cemetery on foot. Mattancherry Palace for the murals and the Paradesi Synagogue after — both close early, so this is a morning. A Kathakali performance in the evening, arriving early for the make-up. · Kochi · Walking · short drive

Day 3

The climb from the coast through rubber and spice country into tea. The last stretch is winding. Arrive mid-afternoon with time for an estate walk before dark, and expect it to be genuinely cold after sunset. · Munnar · Private car · 4 hrs

Day 4

Eravikulam National Park at opening for the Nilgiri tahr — entry is capped daily and the park closes for calving, roughly February to March. The Tea Museum after, then Top Station in the afternoon, weather allowing; cloud usually closes that view by late morning. · Munnar · Private car · park shuttle

Day 5

Down out of the tea and across to Kumily on the Tamil Nadu border. A spice plantation walk in the afternoon — cardamom, pepper, vanilla and clove growing in the same few acres — and Kalaripayattu in the evening if you want it. · Thekkady · Private car · 3.5 hrs

Day 6

The dawn Periyar boat, then west for a half-day shikara through the Alleppey canals before the run up to Kochi. The longest day on the route, and worth it only if your flight is late — otherwise take the houseboat option instead. · Thekkady · Alleppey · Kochi · overnight — · Boat · private car · 5 hrs

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes — every route we publish is a starting point, not a fixed departure. The pace, the order of stops, the length of each stay and the accommodation style are all adjustable, and we build the final version around your dates. This 5-night outline covers the full circuit, returning to Kochi.
By private car with a driver throughout. Kerala's roads are good but distances are slower than the map suggests — the Munnar climb is around four hours from the coast and the hill roads are winding. A driver for the whole trip is standard here and removes the hardest part of travelling.
We match the stay to the place rather than to a single brand — heritage buildings in Fort Kochi, plantation bungalows in the hills, lakeside properties on the backwaters. Category and style are agreed with you before booking; we do not commit you to inventory you have not seen.
Suitability is set out in full on this page, including who it does not suit. In short: it is built around a realistic pace rather than maximum coverage, and the traveller-type notes above are honest about where each route is demanding.
October to March is the reliable window across Kerala. The monsoon from June to September is cheaper and genuinely atmospheric, but coastal swimming becomes unsafe and hill roads carry landslide risk. Eravikulam National Park also closes for calving, roughly February to March.
A single point of contact before departure and throughout the journey, with your driver and local arrangements coordinated by us. We confirm park bookings, permits and boat slots in advance rather than leaving them to arrival.
Because departures are simpler from the airport city, and it lets Fort Kochi have two proper days rather than one evening. The trade is a longer final travel day, which can be swapped for a houseboat night if your flight allows.
