Kerala Luxury Slow Journey

Met at Kochi airport and driven to Fort Kochi, about ninety minutes. Nothing is scheduled beyond checking in — the first evening is for the seafront, the Chinese fishing nets at sunset and finding dinner nearby.

The climb from the coast through rubber and spice country into tea, around four hours. The Cheeyappara and Valara falls sit beside the road below Adimali and are the stop on the way up — worth it when there is water behind them, which means the monsoon and the months after it; in the dry season they are a trickle and the stop is a short one. The last stretch is winding. Arrive mid-afternoon with time for an estate walk before dark, and expect it to be genuinely cold after sunset.

Eravikulam early if you want it, and otherwise nothing planned. Estate walks, a plantation lunch and an afternoon left open — the point of this route.

Down out of the tea and south along the ridge, around three and a half hours, to Kumily on the Tamil Nadu border and a plantation stay. The afternoon is a private plantation walk, and the evening is yours; the first boat slot on Periyar lake the next morning is booked for those who want it, and skipped without comment by those who do not.

Leave after breakfast, or after the dawn boat, and drop west out of the hills to Kumarakom, about three and a half hours: open water rather than canals, and the point is stillness — a sunset cruise from the resort jetty, the bird sanctuary at dawn if you are here between November and February, and very little else by design.

A chartered boat for the day, crew and cook aboard and nobody else: out through the canals and onto open Vembanad, lunch on the water, moored back at the resort jetty before dark. The bird sanctuary at dawn between November and February, a village canoe through the polders in the afternoon if you would rather be smaller on the water, and the rest of the day still. This is the night most people would have added anywhere else.

A last morning on the lake, then the transfer to Kochi airport, about two and a half hours — a flight after about one in the afternoon is comfortable. Add nights here rather than anywhere else on the route.
