When to go

When is your Turkey?

Spring
April – May
Wildflowers and Clear Light

The best all-round window. Istanbul is mild, Cappadocia is green and the balloon mornings are calm, the ruins at Ephesus and Hierapolis are walkable without heat, and the coast is warm without being crowded. April brings tulips to Istanbul’s parks.

Autumn
September – October
Warm Sea, Cooler Cities

The other ideal window and the one most Indian travellers choose, because it sits after the monsoon. The sea is at its warmest, the coast stays open into late October, and the interior cools to walking temperatures. Vineyards and orchards in Cappadocia are harvesting.

Summer
June – August
Coast Season, Inland Heat

Peak season for the Turquoise Coast and the gulet fleet. Istanbul is hot and busy, and Cappadocia and Pamukkale need early starts and shade by mid-afternoon. It works well for a coast-led trip; less well for a ruins-led one.

Winter
November – March
Snow on the Fairy Chimneys

Istanbul is cold, wet and quiet, with short queues at Hagia Sophia and Topkapı. Cappadocia under snow is extraordinary, and balloons still fly on calm mornings, though more flights are cancelled. The coast largely closes. Konya’s dervish ceremonies for Şeb-i Arus fall in mid-December.

Turkey visa — what you need to know

Indian passport holders need a visa for Türkiye. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes a conditional online route: ordinary passport holders who hold a valid visa or residence permit from a Schengen member state, the USA, the UK or Ireland may obtain a single-entry e-Visa valid for one month at www.evisa.gov.tr, provided they meet certain conditions. Everyone else applies for a sticker visa through the Embassy of Türkiye in New Delhi or the Consulates General in Mumbai and Hyderabad.

Fee and processing, as the authorities publish them For the e-Visa, the Republic of Türkiye’s portal states that the fee and validity vary by country of travel document and are shown after you select India in its application flow; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that eligible Indian passport holders receive a single-entry e-Visa valid for one month for tourism or commerce, on condition of a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit and other conditions the portal sets out. The portal advises applying at least forty-eight hours before departure and issues the e-Visa by download link and email. For sticker visas, the Embassy of Türkiye in New Delhi publishes a fee notice dated 1 January 2022 listing ₹4,555 for single entry and ₹14,410 for multiple entry, plus a Gateway centre service charge of US$50 before taxes for a regular application in India; it publishes no processing time. Fees and rules are set by the Turkish authorities and change; confirm both on the official portal or with the embassy when you apply. Final visa decisions remain with the Turkish authorities.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes. Indian ordinary passport holders need a visa. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that those holding a valid visa or residence permit from a Schengen member state, the USA, the UK or Ireland may obtain a single-entry e-Visa valid for one month at www.evisa.gov.tr, provided they meet certain conditions the portal sets out. Without one of those documents you apply for a sticker visa through the Embassy of Türkiye in New Delhi or the Consulates General in Mumbai and Hyderabad. There is no visa on arrival for Indian passports. Final visa decisions remain with the Turkish authorities.
The e-Visa portal says the only requirement is that the visa or residence permit is still valid by date on the day you enter Türkiye. Used or unused single-entry visas are accepted as long as their validity covers your entry date, and e-Visas of other countries are not accepted as a supporting document. An expired visa does not qualify, however recently it expired.
The portal states that the fee varies by country of travel document and shows it after you select India in the application; we do not reproduce it because it is set and displayed there. It advises applying at least forty-eight hours before departure, and the e-Visa is delivered as a download link on the final step and by email. Payment is by card, and unused or refused e-Visas are not refunded. For sticker visas the embassy in New Delhi publishes a fee notice dated 1 January 2022 — single entry ₹4,555, multiple entry ₹14,410, plus a Gateway centre service charge — and no processing time.
Seven nights covers Istanbul and Cappadocia properly. Nine to ten nights adds Pamukkale and Ephesus, which is the classic circuit most first-time visitors take. Twelve nights or more lets you finish on the Turquoise Coast or add the deep-history east. Because Istanbul to Cappadocia is a flight rather than a drive, adding a region costs a travel day as well as the nights in it.
April to May and September to October. Both give mild weather in Istanbul, calm balloon mornings in Cappadocia and comfortable walking at Ephesus and Pamukkale; autumn also has the warmest sea and sits after the Indian monsoon. Summer is for a coast-led trip and is hot inland. Winter is cold and quiet, and Cappadocia under snow is beautiful, though more balloon flights are cancelled.
Yes — easier than in most of Europe. A meze table is largely vegetarian, red lentil soup is on every menu, and pide with cheese, gözleme, stuffed vegetables, beans and rice are everywhere. Istanbul has Indian restaurants around Sultanahmet and Taksim. Pork is rare in a Muslim-majority country. Strict vegetarians and Jain travellers should ask whether soups and rice are made with meat stock, and will find breakfast — bread, cheese, olives, eggs, honey, tomatoes — the easiest meal of the day.
UPI does not work in Turkey. Cards are accepted almost everywhere in cities and resorts, and ATMs are widespread; carry some lira for small purchases, bazaars, taxis and tips. Hotels often quote rates in euros. A local SIM or eSIM from the airport gives fast data across the country, which matters for taxi apps and maps.
