Leave Kochi early and drive up through Chalakudy into the river valley, roughly two to two and a half hours. The main fall is reached by a short walk from the entrance, with a steeper path down to the base for those who want it. Vazhachal is a few minutes further on the same road and Charpa is visible from the roadside when the flow is up. Frequently asked

Roughly two to two and a half hours each way, depending on where in Kochi you start and on traffic through Chalakudy. It is a full day out — leaving early makes the difference between a relaxed visit and a rushed one.
No. Swimming at the main fall is prohibited and the rocks above it are genuinely dangerous — people have drowned here, and the current is far stronger than it looks from above. Stay on the marked viewing paths and behind the barriers. This is not a place to test the rules.
It is a different sight. Between roughly February and May the flow drops considerably and the falls are a fraction of their monsoon volume — still a pleasant forest drive, but not the wall of water most photographs show. If the waterfall itself is the reason you are going, come after June.
Yes. During heavy monsoon the forest department restricts access to the lower path, and occasionally to the site, when the river is high. These closures are decided on the day and cannot be predicted in advance. We will tell you as soon as we know, and we would rather rearrange than take you to a closed gate.
The top viewpoint is a short, easy walk from the entrance. The path down to the base of the fall is steeper, uneven and slippery when wet, and takes some effort in both directions. You can see the fall without doing it.
It fits with a Kochi stay either side, and it can be run on the way to or from Munnar with an early start, though that makes for a long day. It does not combine well with the backwaters on the same day — the roads run in opposite directions.
The upper viewpoint is manageable for most people, including children and older travellers, as it is a short walk on a made path. The descent to the base is not, and there is no shame in staying at the top — the view of the main fall from there is the one worth having.
