Day-by-day itinerary
Met at Fiumicino and driven into the city. The first evening is for the centro storico on foot — the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain — and dinner in Trastevere. Overnight in Rome.
The Colosseum, the Forum and the Palatine with a private guide and a timed entry, walked as one site in the cooler morning. The afternoon is free — the Capitoline hill, Campo de' Fiori, or an early evening on the Aventine. Overnight in Rome.
The Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel with a guide, then St Peter's Basilica. The afternoon is the Spanish Steps and Villa Borghese, and the evening a last dinner in Rome. Overnight in Rome.
Ninety minutes north into Tuscany. The Duomo and Brunelleschi's dome in the afternoon, the Baptistery doors, and the Ponte Vecchio at dusk with the Oltrarno for dinner. Overnight in Florence.
The Uffizi with a timed entry in the morning and Michelangelo's David at the Accademia after lunch. The late afternoon climb to Piazzale Michelangelo, or the quieter San Miniato above it, for the city at sunset. Overnight in Florence.
Two hours east to Venice, arriving by water taxi up the Grand Canal. St Mark's Basilica and the square in the afternoon, then the lanes of San Polo and Dorsoduro once the day-trippers leave. Overnight in Venice.
The Doge's Palace and the Bridge of Sighs at opening, then the vaporetto out to Murano for the glass and Burano for the painted houses. A gondola in the evening, or the Rialto market lanes. Overnight in Venice.
