Jaipur to Udaipur the Long Way — Jodhpur and Mount Abu in Six Nights

The trip starts at Jaipur airport, where your driver meets you for the transfer to the hotel. Nothing is scheduled for the rest of the day. Use it to rest after the journey or to take a first look at the city on your own; the sightseeing proper begins tomorrow.

A full day on Jaipur’s essentials. It begins at Amber Fort, the hill fortress-palace that was the Kachhwaha capital before Jaipur was built. Back inside the old city walls come the honeycombed screen of the Hawa Mahal, the giant stone instruments of Jantar Mantar and the City Palace. The white-marble Birla Temple is the last stop. Tickets and guides are paid for at each monument.

The first of three days spent mostly on the road as the route works its way south-west. Today’s drive crosses the dry heart of the state to Jodhpur. No sightseeing is scheduled; you arrive, check in and have the evening free. Jodhpur is an overnight stop on this itinerary, not a touring day.

After breakfast the car continues south and then climbs into the Aravallis to Mount Abu, the only hill station in Rajasthan. Again the day is a transfer, with no sightseeing listed. What it gives you is a night in cooler air and a change of scene after the plains, before the final leg to Udaipur.

The last of the road days comes down from the hills and crosses to Udaipur. Nothing is planned beyond the drive and check-in, which leaves the later part of the day free once you arrive. The next day is given over entirely to the city.

Udaipur in a day, starting at the City Palace above Lake Pichola and the carved Jagdish Temple a few steps away. A boat ride on the lake follows, with the ticket bought at the jetty. Later come the fountains of Saheliyon Ki Bari, Fateh Sagar Lake and the restored Bagore Ki Haveli, before the drive up to Sajjangarh for the view over everything.

The trip ends in Udaipur rather than returning to Jaipur. After breakfast and check-out, the car takes you to Udaipur airport or the railway station, whichever you are leaving from, at a time that fits your flight or train. There is no sightseeing on the final morning.
