Jamaica Waterfalls and Beaches: Montego Bay and Negril, 5 Nights

Land at Montego Bay, Jamaica's main gateway, and step into warm air and reggae in the arrivals hall. You are transferred the short way to the hotel. The evening is for settling in: a swim, a first taste of jerk chicken or ackee, and perhaps a stroll along the Hip Strip, the lively seafront road of bars, craft stalls and small beaches such as Doctor's Cave.

A long, wet and very happy day. The tour heads east along the north coast into the hills above Ocho Rios, to the Blue Hole, a turquoise pool with rope swings and ledges for jumping, and the quieter Secret Falls nearby, both where operating. Lunch, at your own expense, is at a jerk centre. The afternoon brings Dunn's River Falls, where guides lead a human chain up the terraced cascades. Wear swimwear and water shoes, and meet the tour at its pickup point.

After breakfast the road follows the coast west past fishing villages and sugar land to Negril, the laid-back far end of the island. Negril has two faces: Seven Mile Beach, a long, gently shelving strand of pale sand good for swimming, and the West End, where the land rises into cliffs and caves above clear water. Spend the afternoon on the sand and let the pace slow.

Today heads south-east into St Elizabeth, the breadbasket of Jamaica, to YS Falls, a set of seven waterfalls on a private estate. A short open-air ride brings you through pasture to the falls, where wooden walkways and stone steps climb beside the water to cool pools for swimming, with a rope swing for the brave. The gardens and the tall trees make it a gentler, greener day than the north coast. Back to Negril for the evening.

The Appleton Estate lies in the Nassau Valley, a bowl of cane fields and limestone hills, and has made rum for well over two centuries. A guided visit follows the path from cane to barrel, with a tasting for adults; the entrance fee is paid at the estate, which reopened in 2026 after Hurricane Melissa and opens on set weekdays, so the day is fixed at booking. Return to Negril in time for the evening ritual: watching the sun drop into the sea from the West End cliffs.

A last swim before breakfast, then check out. The drive back to Montego Bay airport takes around an hour and a half, so allow plenty of time before international departures. Blue Mountain coffee, a bottle of rum and hot pepper sauce all travel well in checked baggage, and the airport has good shops if you have left it late.
