Journey highlights

Why you'll love this journey

  1. A beach villa on a shallow, sheltered lagoon — waist-deep water a long way out
  2. A speedboat transfer rather than a seaplane, which is quicker and simpler with children
  3. A kids' club for the hours when it suits, and a lagoon for the hours when it does not
  4. Paddleboards, kayaks and a first snorkel over the shallow end of the house reef
  5. A dhoni out to the outer reef for older children who can already snorkel
  6. A sandbank picnic, reached by boat and above water only at the right tide
  7. Turtles and reef sharks on the house reef, neither of which is a threat
  8. Five nights, so nobody spends the holiday in transit
Day by day

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Your islandSpeedboat

A short speedboat hop across the atoll to a beach villa on a shallow, sheltered lagoon — the transfer is twenty to forty minutes rather than a wait at the seaplane terminal, which with children is the whole argument for this kind of island. An easy first afternoon: the water immediately in front of the villa is warm and stays waist-deep a considerable distance out, which is all most children need on day one.

Day 2

Your island

The lagoon, and the kids' club when it suits rather than as a schedule. The water on this side of the island shelves so gradually that it stays shallow well beyond where an adult would ordinarily stop, which is what makes it work for small children — no drop-off, no current, and the reef edge far enough out to be a destination rather than a hazard. The middle of the day belongs to shade.

Day 3

Your island

On the water properly. Paddleboards and kayaks in the morning from the watersports centre, which are included at most resorts, and then a first snorkel over the shallow end of the house reef — where the coral starts, the fish are dense and the water is still standing depth. Turtles and small reef sharks are common and neither is a danger. Reef shoes are worth wearing: stonefish are the real hazard and coral cuts are slow to heal.

Day 4

Your islandDhoni

Out by dhoni to the outer reef for anyone confident enough to snorkel in deeper water, where the drop-off begins and the fish are correspondingly larger — a guide goes in with the group and buoyancy aids are standard. Younger children stay aboard with the glass-bottom section or return with the second boat. In the right season and atoll the same trip may see manta rays, which is a different order of experience.

Day 5

Your islandDhoni

A sandbank picnic, which is the day everybody photographs. The bank is a spit of sand that is above water only at certain states of the tide, reached by dhoni, with lunch set out on it and nothing else in any direction — no trees, no buildings, and the resort a distance off across the lagoon. It is arranged around the tide rather than the clock. The afternoon is the beach again, without complaint.

Day 6

Your islandSpeedboat

The speedboat back to Malé, timed against your international flight. Most resorts hold a departure lounge with showers and somewhere for children to be while you wait, which is worth confirming at the time of booking rather than discovering on the day. Malé airport is on its own island and the crossing is short, so the transfer is straightforward compared with a seaplane departure.

Good to know

Frequently asked

On the right island, very much so. The lagoons are shallow, warm and calm, most resorts run a kids' club, and there is nothing to organise once you arrive. The reservations are cost and confinement: an island you can walk round in twenty minutes suits some children and bores others by day four. Choosing a resort with a genuine programme rather than a room full of toys is the thing that matters.
Speedboat, almost always. It is quicker door to door, runs at any hour including after a late arrival, has no baggage restriction and does not strand you if the weather closes in. Seaplanes are spectacular and they are also loud, cramped, daylight-only and subject to long waits at the terminal. With small children the speedboat resorts within an hour of Malé are the sensible field to choose from.
Yes. Blacktip and whitetip reef sharks are common in Maldivian lagoons, typically a metre or so long, and they have no interest in people — children see them from the shallows regularly. The genuine hazards on a reef are stonefish and lionfish, which is why reef shoes are worth having, and coral cuts, which infect easily in warm water. Standing on coral damages it and is bad for you.
Honestly, not a great deal, and that is worth knowing before booking. A resort island is the whole destination — there is no town to visit and no sightseeing. What exists is the kids' club, the pool, the watersports centre, excursions by dhoni, and the reef. Families who want variety should consider adding a few nights elsewhere; families who want to stop entirely will find it perfect.
Not to enjoy it. A shallow lagoon that stays waist-deep for a long way out is far more forgiving than a beach with surf, and buoyancy aids are standard at every watersports centre. What non-swimmers will miss is the house reef, which is where most of the interest lies. Many resorts run short swimming and snorkelling lessons, which is a good use of a first morning.
