Day-by-day itinerary
You arrive at Moscow's international airport and are taken to your hotel. Moscow is built on a scale that takes some adjusting to — the avenues are wide and the distances are long. The rest of the day is free. · Moscow
A metro tour late in the morning, visiting several of the older stations, which were built as public palaces with chandeliers, mosaics and marble rather than as mere transport. You then continue to Red Square for a walking tour of the square and its surroundings. · Moscow
You meet an English-speaking guide late in the morning for a panoramic city tour. It takes in the Sparrow Hills above the river and the Moscow State University building that stands on them, one of the seven towers built in the Stalin era that still define the skyline. · Moscow
After breakfast you check out and transfer to the Moscow railway station for the train north to St Petersburg. On arrival at the St Petersburg station you continue to your hotel. The line runs almost arrow-straight between the two cities. · St Petersburg
Late in the morning you visit the Hermitage Museum, with the entrance included — it occupies the Winter Palace and several buildings beside it and holds one of the largest art collections anywhere. A panoramic city tour follows with photo stops at the Church on the Spilled Blood and St Isaac's cathedral. · St Petersburg
You meet an English-speaking guide at the hotel for a private day out to Peterhof, the palace built on the Gulf of Finland with terraces of fountains running down to the sea, and to the Peter and Paul Fortress, the original citadel around which the city was built. · St Petersburg
