Completely different, and that is the point. Alleppey is a large boat on open water and broad channels. Munroe is a small canoe on canals that are sometimes barely wider than the boat, passing directly between people's homes and gardens. If you have already done a houseboat, this is not a repeat; if you want the houseboat experience, this is not a substitute.
Yes, more than most people expect. The canals are shallow and some routes are only passable at certain water levels, so departure times are set around the tide rather than around convenience. Your boatman will choose the route that works on the day, which may not be the one shown in photographs.
The heavy monsoon months make the canoe trip uncomfortable and at times unworkable, and canal levels can rise enough to restrict routes. October to March is the reliable window. Early morning is both the coolest and the most active time on the water.
The canoes are small, low and stable, and the water is shallow and calm — but you sit close to the waterline and you cannot get out mid-route. If that sounds uncomfortable, say so and we will look at alternatives rather than book it and hope.
Yes, quite literally — the canals run past homes, washing places and small jetties in daily use. Keep your voice down, do not photograph people or the insides of houses without asking, and accept that this is a working community rather than an attraction laid on for visitors.
Typically two to three hours on the water, which is about right for the experience. The rest of the day is the drive and time at Ashtamudi lake. We do not stretch the canoe time beyond what is comfortable in an open boat.
Kollam is the practical base, and the day works from Varkala, Trivandrum or an Alleppey stay with a longer drive. Tell us where you are staying and we will tell you honestly whether the driving time makes sense from there.
