Good to Know

Frequently asked

It sits under the auroral oval, the band around the pole where the lights are most frequent, and it has an airport, good hotels and a dozen professional chase operators who drive out each night to wherever the cloud has cleared — sometimes to the Finnish border. Between September and early April the odds over four nights are good. They are never certain, and this package does not say otherwise.
Winter, or the shoulders of it: late September to early April, when the nights are dark enough. From late November to mid-January Tromsø has the polar night, when the sun does not rise but the sky glows blue for a few hours around midday — a strange and beautiful time to be there. If you want fjords, mountains and long days instead, the nine-night Scandinavian Capitals & Fjords journey is the summer product.
More than most people expect. The cable car above the city, the Arctic Cathedral, the Polar Museum and the harbour by day; a fjord cruise among the islands; a husky sled through the Lyngen Alps; and an evening at a Sámi reindeer camp with a fire and a meal. The itinerary gives you four nights so that the chases can be spread across them and the days stay unhurried.
It can — flights from India connect through Oslo, so you could fly straight on to Tromsø and give it all six nights. We keep Oslo because two days in the capital break the journey, the Vigeland park and the polar ships are worth seeing, and it gives you a city to shop and eat in. Tell us if you would rather have six Arctic nights.
Both are aurora trips; the character differs. Tromsø is a real Arctic city with fjords, mountains and a lively harbour, and its chases are the most professional anywhere. Finnish Lapland is forests, frozen lakes, Santa and glass-roofed cabins, and it suits families with children better. Couples choose on landscape; families usually choose Finland.
