Three Hill Stations — Ooty, Coorg & Kodaikanal

Six nights above a thousand metres and not a city day in the whole trip. The Nilgiri downs, Kodagu's shade-grown coffee, and finally Kodaikanal in the Palani hills — three separate ranges, three different growing landscapes, and the long drives between them running through forest rather than highway.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Coimbatore to Ooty by the Mettupalayam ghat — under three hours, thirty-six numbered hairpins, and a climb of about two thousand metres out of the plains. The afternoon is deliberately empty. Ooty rewards a slow first evening more than a scheduled one, and the lake and the town centre are both walkable from anywhere you are likely to be staying. · Coimbatore to Ooty · overnight Ooty · Private car

Day 2

Doddabetta at 2,637 m first, while the range is still visible. The 1848 botanical gardens after it. Then down to Coonoor by the rack railway where seats allow, and a working tea estate and factory in the afternoon — the leaf followed from the withering loft through rolling and oxidation to the grading table, which is the part that changes how you buy tea afterwards. Lamb's Rock or Dolphin's Nose to close, both looking down into the Coimbatore plain. · Ooty and Coonoor · overnight Ooty · Private car and mountain railway

Day 3

Pykara on the way out, then the westward crossing — Gudalur, Mudumalai, and up the Nagarhole boundary into Kodagu. Six hours or so, much of it under canopy, and the leg where wildlife on the verges is a real prospect rather than a hope. The Madikeri evening is left free, which after this drive is the only reasonable way to plan it. · Ooty to Madikeri · overnight Coorg · Private car

Day 4

An estate walk in the cool of the morning through arabica grown under shade, with pepper on the trunks and cardamom in the damp ground — a working landscape that changes with the month, and the drying yard alive if the harvest is in. Abbey Falls afterwards. The afternoon takes the valley road up to Bhagamandala and Talacauvery, where the Kaveri rises, and comes down for sunset at Raja's Seat. · Madikeri and around · overnight Coorg · Private car

Day 5

The longest day of the trip and the one that makes the rest of it possible. East out of Kodagu, down onto the plateau, and then south-east across the plains toward the Palani hills — a full day's driving, broken for lunch, with the final climb up to Kodaikanal at around 2,130 m in the late afternoon. It is a genuine transfer day rather than a sightseeing one, and the itinerary treats it as such: nothing is scheduled at either end. · Kodagu to Kodaikanal · overnight Kodaikanal · Private car

Day 6

Coaker's Walk first, a paved kilometre along the escarpment edge that on a clear morning shows the plains two thousand metres below and on a misty one shows nothing at all, which is its own experience. Bryant Park after it, then the Pillar Rocks — three granite faces standing over a hundred metres above the shola forest. The afternoon works round the lake, which is small enough to cycle and pretty enough to be worth it, with Bear Shola Falls or Green Valley View depending on the light. · Kodaikanal · Private car

Day 7

The Palani ghat down through the shola and into the dry country below — about 115 km and three hours to Madurai, which has the nearest airport and a main-line railway station. Silver Cascade is on the descent and takes five minutes. If the departure is late enough, the Meenakshi temple in Madurai is worth the hour before the flight; if not, the drive is comfortable for anything from early afternoon onwards. · Kodaikanal to Madurai · overnight — · Private car

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Yes, and there is no version of this route where it is not. The two hill stations sit in different ranges with the Tamil Nadu plains between them, so the road drops to the flat, crosses, and climbs again — a full day with a lunch stop, and the final ascent in the afternoon. It is the price of putting three ranges in one trip. The itinerary schedules nothing at either end of it for that reason.
It is smaller, quieter and less built. Ooty is a working town of some size with a racecourse, a bus stand and traffic; Kodaikanal is a lake, an escarpment walk and a plateau of shola forest and grassland, with far less around it. Ooty has the railway and the tea; Kodaikanal has the cliff edge and the Pillar Rocks. Most people who see both prefer Kodaikanal for stillness and Ooty for things to do.
Almost certainly not, and no itinerary should suggest otherwise. Strobilanthes kunthiana flowers on a twelve-year cycle across these hills and turns whole slopes blue when it does; the last widespread bloom on the Palanis was in 2018. Outside those years the shola-grassland is still the reason to walk the plateau, but the flower is a once-a-decade event rather than a seasonal one.
Because Madurai is three hours down the Palani ghat and Coimbatore is closer to five back the way you came. Ending at Madurai turns the trip into a one-way line and puts you at a temple city with good flight and rail connections. It also opens the option of continuing — the Madurai and Rameswaram routes start exactly where this one stops, if you want to keep going rather than fly home.
It is the most movement of any circuit in this group, and it is honest to say so. Two of the six days are transfer days. What you get for it is three genuinely different hill regions rather than one seen thoroughly. If two long drives sounds like too many, the four-night Ooty and Coorg route drops Kodaikanal, and the five- and six-night loops swap it for Mysuru, which is a far shorter leg.
