Day by day

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

AmritsarPrivate transfer and vehicle

Your driver meets you at Amritsar airport or the railway station and takes you to the hotel. The afternoon is for the old city: the Golden Temple, where anyone may sit down to a meal at the langar, and Jallianwala Bagh beside it, with its preserved wall and well. If you arrive early enough and the day’s schedule suits, the Attari–Wagah retreat ceremony can be added as an optional outing; we confirm its timing when we quote. Return to the temple after dark if you have the energy.

Day 2

Amritsar to DalhousieOvernight DalhousiePrivate vehicle

A road day. Dalhousie is about 200 km from Amritsar, across the plain to Pathankot and then up a long climb into Chamba district; allow roughly five to six hours with stops, more in rain or holiday traffic. Early risers can see the Golden Temple once more before breakfast. No sightseeing is scheduled on the way. You reach Dalhousie in the afternoon with time for a first walk on the level road between Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk.

Day 3

Dalhousie and KhajjiarOvernight DalhousiePrivate vehicle

The day on the high ground above the town. The car heads out on the Khajjiar road, with the Dainkund ridge walk first if the morning is clear, and the Kalatop forest road if vehicles are being allowed in. Khajjiar itself, 22 to 24 km from Dalhousie, is a grass clearing ringed by deodar with a small pond and the wooden Khajji Nag shrine. Snow, rain or closures can shorten this day; Khajjiar is the part we plan around. Back in Dalhousie, St John’s and St Francis churches are a short walk from the squares.

Day 4

Dalhousie to DharamshalaOvernight DharamshalaPrivate vehicle

The road drops out of Chamba district and runs south-east along the foot of the Dhauladhar into Kangra — about 120 km, and four to five hours on hill roads in normal conditions. No stops are scheduled. If you arrive with daylight in hand, the HPCA cricket stadium and the War Memorial in the lower town are on the way in, subject to access on the day. Your hotel may be in the lower town or up at McLeod Ganj, as agreed in your quote.

Day 5

Dharamshala and McLeod GanjOvernight DharamshalaPrivate vehicle

A full day on Dharamshala’s upper level. Start at the Tsuglagkhang, the main Tibetan temple, then walk the market streets of McLeod Ganj. Bhagsunag temple is about 2 km further on, with a path to the waterfall for those who want the climb. St John in the Wilderness is on the road back down. If time allows, the afternoon can take in the Naddi viewpoint or the Norbulingka Institute at Sidhpur. Triund is a separate full-day hike and is not part of this itinerary.

Day 6

DharamshalaPrivate transfer

The trip ends in Dharamshala. After breakfast and check-out, the car takes you to your onward airport or station as agreed in your quote. Which one that is — Kangra airport at Gaggal close by, or a longer drive to Pathankot or Amritsar — depends on your flight or train, so please tell us your onward plans when you enquire. There is no sightseeing on the final morning, and no return night in Amritsar.

Good to know

Frequently asked

It ends in Dharamshala on the morning of day six. The departure transfer is to your onward airport or station as agreed in your quote. Kangra airport at Gaggal is the closest, 13 to 14 km away; Pathankot Cantt station is about 88 km and Amritsar about 200 km. Tell us your flight or train and we will price the right transfer.
It is optional, not guaranteed. The ceremony’s start time changes with the season and occasionally at short notice, and with only one night in Amritsar it depends on when you arrive. If it matters to you, tell us; we will check the current timing and either fit it in or suggest a second night in Amritsar.
Amritsar to Dalhousie is about 200 km and usually takes five to six hours. Dalhousie to Dharamshala is about 120 km and four to five hours, because it is hill road for much of the way. These are planning figures, not promises: rain, landslides, roadworks and holiday traffic all lengthen them.
Either is possible, and the quote will say which. McLeod Ganj is the upper settlement, about 10 km above the lower town, and is where the Tsuglagkhang and the Tibetan market are. Hotels in the lower town and the valley are easier to reach by car. The sightseeing day covers McLeod Ganj wherever you sleep.
Neither is promised. Triund is a full-day hike that the Kangra administration has at times restricted or made subject to police permission, and it is not in this itinerary. Kalatop’s forest road is visited on the Khajjiar day only if vehicles are being allowed in. Both depend on weather and on orders in force at the time.
