Day by day

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Bagdogra / New Jalpaiguri to DarjeelingOvernight DarjeelingPrivate vehicle

Your driver meets you at Bagdogra airport or New Jalpaiguri station and starts the climb. The district puts Darjeeling about 90 km from the airport and 88 km from the station; we allow three to four hours, because the hill road is narrow and winding and the route taken depends on its condition that day. Check in and rest. If there is light left, walk to Chowrasta, the square on the ridge, and round to Observatory Hill. Nothing else is planned, and tomorrow starts early.

Day 2

DarjeelingPrivate vehicle

If the forecast is fair, leave before dawn for Tiger Hill, about 11 km away, to watch the light reach Kanchenjunga. This is an attempt, not a promise: it depends on the weather and on whatever vehicle limits are in force. On the way back, stop at Batasia Loop and the Gorkha War Memorial. After breakfast the car takes you to Birch Hill for the zoo and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, then on to the Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre at Lebong. The joy train to Ghum fits in the afternoon if seats can be had.

Day 3

Darjeeling to KalimpongOvernight KalimpongPrivate vehicle

A short stop at the Peace Pagoda and the Japanese Temple on the Jalapahar slope, then the road east to Kalimpong — about 55 km, for which we allow about two and a half hours. After check-in the afternoon goes to the two hills at either end of the town: Durpin first, for the Zang Dhok Palri monastery and the view down to the Teesta, then Deolo Hill for the late light. A flower nursery is added on the way if one is receiving visitors that day.

Day 4

Kalimpong to Bagdogra / New JalpaiguriPrivate vehicle

If your departure time allows, the morning takes in Tharpa Choling monastery and MacFarlane Church before the drive down. Kalimpong is about 80 km from Bagdogra airport and about 75 km from New Jalpaiguri station, and we allow about three hours for either. Please book a flight or train from mid-afternoon onward and send us the ticket before you pay for it; we set the morning against it, and drop the sightseeing first if time is tight.

Good to know

Frequently asked

Yes, for the main sights of both. Darjeeling gets one full day and an arrival evening; Kalimpong gets an afternoon and, if your departure is late enough, a morning. What the trip lacks is a spare day for bad weather. If the Kanchenjunga view matters to you, add a third night in Darjeeling and the rest stays as it is.
The time for it is in the itinerary; the ticket is not in the price. The joy train runs from Darjeeling to Ghum and back by way of the Batasia Loop, and seats are limited. We check availability at the time of quoting and can add it to your quote if seats can be had.
No one can promise that. The view depends on cloud, and the police have in the past limited the number of vehicles allowed up each morning and issued passes. We check the current rule when we quote and your driver judges the weather on the day. If it fails, the last morning in Darjeeling is a second chance.
Darjeeling is about 90 km from Bagdogra, Kalimpong about 55 km from Darjeeling, and Bagdogra about 80 km from Kalimpong. We plan on three to four hours, two and a half hours and three hours respectively. These are working assumptions on hill roads, not guarantees; rain, landslides and traffic can all add time.
Tell us your dates and we arrange around it. The zoo has one weekly closed day, which we confirm at the time of quoting. If your full day lands on it, we move the zoo and the mountaineering institute to the arrival afternoon or the morning you leave for Kalimpong, and confirm the current closed day and hours when we quote.
