Port Blair in Full — 4 Nights with Baratang, Ross Island and the Marine Park

Four nights in one Port Blair hotel and a different excursion each day: the Cellular Jail, Baratang’s creek and caves, Ross Island with North Bay, and whichever island of the marine park is open in your season, with Chidiya Tapu for sunset. No ferries to other islands, and no packing between nights. It covers everything South Andaman has, and leaves Havelock for another trip.

Day by day

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Port BlairVehicle with driver

After the airport and the hotel, the first stop is Corbyn’s Cove, a palm-edged beach a few kilometres from the centre, good for stretching your legs after the flight. The Cellular Jail comes next. It took ten years to build and was finished in 1906, and its design kept every prisoner out of sight of every other. If the courtyard show is running on your evening and you have the energy, stay for it; we check the language and the timing when your dates are fixed.

Day 2

Port Blair – Baratang – Port BlairOvernight Port BlairVehicle with driver and boat

An early call and a long drive north. Past the checkpoint the road enters forest reserved for the Jarawa, where traffic moves in escorted convoys and may neither stop nor take pictures. After the vehicle ferry, the day’s centrepiece is on the water: a narrow boat threading a channel roofed with mangrove, and then a walk inland to caves hung with limestone formations. You return the same way and reach the hotel around dusk. The mud volcano is not part of the day and is not promised; it is considered only if access has reopened.

Day 3

Port Blair – Ross Island – North Bay – Port BlairOvernight Port BlairBoat and vehicle with driver

An easier day, spent in the harbour. A boat from the waterfront crosses first to Ross Island, the seat of the British administration until the 1940s, where a church, a bakery and officers’ quarters stand roofless under strangler figs. North Bay, the next stop, is about the coral: glass-bottom boats and snorkelling are offered there and paid for on the spot. Both crossings are short and both are called off in rough water, in which case this day changes places with another.

Day 4

Port Blair – Wandoor – Chidiya Tapu – Port BlairOvernight Port BlairVehicle with driver and boat

Morning boats leave Wandoor for the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, where one of two islands, Jolly Buoy or Red Skin, is open to visitors at a time. You go to whichever is open, for clear shallows over coral; which one it is, and whether a permit can be had for the day, depends on the park’s current opening and operating conditions. Chidiya Tapu, at the southern end of South Andaman, is the sunset stop that follows, but only if the marine park boat returns early enough. If it does not, we say so on the day and do not rush it.

Day 5

Port BlairVehicle with driver

Breakfast, then the short transfer to the airport. Because every night of this trip is in Port Blair, there is no ferry to worry about on the last morning, which is one of its quiet advantages. Flights leave mostly before noon. If yours is later, the Samudrika museum is the best use of a spare hour.

Good to know

Frequently asked

It is different, not better. This trip is about history, forest, mangrove and reef, all reached from one hotel. Havelock is about beaches and diving and needs a ferry and its own nights. First-time visitors who want beaches should choose an island route; this one suits a second visit, or anyone who would rather not change hotels.
One of them, not both. Only one is open at a time, and the forest department decides which, by season. Permits are reported to be limited each day, and the park to close one day a week, at present Monday. We confirm which island is open for your dates when we quote; neither island is promised by name before that, and a permit is never guaranteed.
Often, but not always. The marine park boat goes out in the morning and the trip takes most of the first half of the day; Chidiya Tapu is a sunset stop. If the boat returns late or the day is cut short, we move Chidiya Tapu to another afternoon, or drop it and tell you.
Around closures and the sea. Ross Island and the marine park are each reported to close one day a week, and the harbour and park boats do not sail in rough weather. Once your dates are known we arrange the four days so that nothing falls on a closed day, and we keep the freedom to swap two days if the weather requires it.
Not for this itinerary: each full day has its own excursion and two of them start early. It would be too many if you expected beach time, because Port Blair is a working port town. If that is what you want, shorten this trip and add nights on Havelock.
