Port Blair and Baratang — 3 Nights with the Limestone Caves

Three nights based in Port Blair with one long day north to Baratang: the forest road, the boat through the mangrove creek and the walk to the limestone caves. The day after is deliberately free, so that a cancelled convoy or boat can be moved to it. The mud volcano is not promised, because access has been restricted since it erupted in October 2025.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Port BlairVehicle with driver

You are collected at the airport and taken to the hotel you keep for the whole trip. The afternoon belongs to the Cellular Jail: seven wings were built around a central tower, three still stand, and the cells are open to walk through. There is a show in the courtyard in the evening if you want it, but tomorrow starts before dawn, so an early dinner and an early night are the better plan. We tell you the pick-up time for Baratang this evening.

Day 2

Port Blair – Baratang – Port BlairOvernight Port BlairVehicle with driver and boat

The longest day of the trip, and the reason for it. Baratang lies roughly a hundred kilometres north, and the road crosses protected forest in which, as it is run at present, vehicles travel only in escorted groups, without stopping or photographs. A vehicle ferry then crosses the strait. From the jetty a small boat runs up a mangrove creek to a landing, and a footpath continues to the limestone caves. The caves are the purpose of the day; the convoy, the permit and the boats that get you there are outside our control and are not guaranteed, so we reconfirm all three before you travel.

Day 3

Port BlairVehicle with driver

Yesterday was a dawn-to-dusk day, so nothing today is fixed. If you would like to go out, the car is available for Corbyn’s Cove, the town’s own beach, and for the Samudrika Naval Marine Museum, which explains the reef and the islands’ ecology in about an hour. The day has a second purpose. If the convoy or the boats did not run yesterday, the Baratang excursion moves here, which is why we would not sell this trip with fewer nights.

Day 4

Port BlairVehicle with driver

A last breakfast and the drive to the airport, which is close to the town. Departures for the mainland are bunched before midday, which leaves little of the morning. If yours leaves later, tell us when you book and we will say honestly whether there is time for anything more than the waterfront.

Good to know

Frequently asked

The journey is half of it: an escorted drive through protected forest, a vehicle ferry across the strait, then a boat along a mangrove creek. At the end of the creek a path leads to limestone caves with formations hanging from the roof. It is a nature day rather than a beach day, and a long one, starting before sunrise.
No, not at present. It erupted in October 2025 after about two decades of quiet, and visitor access was restricted afterwards. We have not seen an official notice that it has reopened, so the trip is built around the creek and the caves. If access is open and operating on your dates we can add it, and we tell you before you pay; it is never promised in advance.
The road crosses a reserve set aside for them, and that is the only connection. Stopping, photographing and any attempt at contact are prohibited by law and enforced by the escort. We do not sell or describe this as a sighting of any kind, and we would ask you not to treat it as one.
The excursion moves to day three, which is kept free for exactly this. If it cannot run on either day, because of weather or an official closure, we tell you as early as we can. Costs that arise from closures are excluded, as no operator controls them, but we would not leave you guessing.
It is manageable but tiring. Expect a very early start, several hours in a vehicle each way, steps on and off a small boat and an uneven footpath to the caves. There is little shade on parts of the walk. Travellers who dislike long road days would be happier with a harbour trip from Port Blair.
