Port Blair with Ross Island and North Bay — 2 Nights on the Harbour

A two-night Port Blair break built around the harbour. The first afternoon is the Cellular Jail; the next day a boat crosses to Ross Island, the ruined headquarters of the penal settlement, and on to the reef at North Bay. It is the history of the islands in two days, and it suits a short visit or an add-on to a longer trip.

Day by day

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Port BlairVehicle with driver

From the airport you go to your hotel, and after lunch to the Cellular Jail. The prison was the point of the whole settlement: political prisoners from across British India were shipped here and held in single cells, and their names are on the walls. Seeing it first matters, because tomorrow’s island was where the people who ran it lived. The courtyard show after dark tells the story aloud; whether it is in Hindi or English depends on the evening.

Day 2

Port Blair – Ross Island – North Bay – Port BlairOvernight Port BlairBoat and vehicle with driver

The boats leave from the water sports complex on the town’s waterfront, and Ross Island is a short crossing away. The whole settlement was governed from this island until the 1941 earthquake and the Japanese occupation that followed. What remains is roofless and overgrown, with deer wandering between the buildings. The boat then continues to North Bay, where the coral is the attraction; a glass-bottom boat or a snorkel is the way to see it, and neither is part of the package, so where they are offered you pay for them there. The trip runs only when the boats are operating and the sea allows, and the order of the two islands is the boatmen’s decision, not ours.

Day 3

Port BlairVehicle with driver

You are driven to the airport after breakfast. With a morning flight there is no time for more. With an afternoon one, Corbyn’s Cove is close enough for an hour on the sand, or the Samudrika museum for the natural history of the reef you looked down on yesterday. Send us the flight details and the last morning is planned to fit.

Good to know

Frequently asked

Yes. They sit in the same harbour and are normally visited on one boat trip from the town’s water sports complex. Ross Island is the history stop and North Bay the reef stop. How long you have on each is set by the boat, not by us. The sailing and the time ashore are not guaranteed, and we confirm the arrangement for your date before you travel.
The shell of a small colonial town: a church, a bakery, a ballroom and the commissioner’s house, abandoned in the 1940s and now held up and pulled apart by tree roots. Deer live among the ruins. It was renamed Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, and both names are in use.
No. The boat to North Bay is included; what you do there is your choice and is paid for on the island. A glass-bottom boat suits anyone who does not want to get wet, and snorkelling is offered too. Availability and the clarity of the water change with the sea, so nothing is booked in advance.
It can be. The boats do not sail in rough weather, and Ross Island is reported to close one day a week, at present Wednesday. We treat that as something to check for your dates, not as a fixed rule, and where we can we swap the days so that the boat trip does not fall on a closure. This matters more on a two-night trip than a longer one.
For the jail and the harbour islands, yes. It is not enough for Havelock, which needs a ferry and at least two nights of its own. Treat this as a short history break or as the opening of a longer trip, and ask us to add island nights if the beaches are what you came for.
