Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

BeijingPrivate airport transfer

Your guide meets you on arrival in Beijing and a private transfer takes you to the hotel. No sightseeing is planned for the first day, which leaves time to rest after the flight. Three nights here give two full days for the city and the Great Wall. Breakfast is included from tomorrow morning.

Day 2

BeijingPrivate vehicle with guide

After breakfast at the hotel you drive out to the Great Wall at Juyong Pass, where the wall climbs the hills on both sides of a narrow valley. You can walk as far along it as you wish before turning back. The day also includes Beijing's scheduled shopping stop, a jade factory, which is part of the programme; there is no obligation to buy. A photo stop at the Olympic stadium follows on the way back to the hotel.

Day 3

BeijingPrivate vehicle with guide

Breakfast is followed by Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, the palace of China's Ming and Qing emperors. You then continue to the Summer Palace, the imperial garden built around a lake on the edge of the city. The last part of the day is free time for shopping at Hongqiao Market. You return to the hotel for a third night in Beijing.

Day 4

Beijing to Xi'anOvernight XianFlight or high-speed train (about 5½ hours by train); private transfers

After breakfast you transfer to the airport or railway station for the journey to Xi'an, which is made by flight or by train. On arrival you are met and driven to the hotel. Because there is only one night here, sightseeing starts the same day with a photo stop at the city wall. The evening is spent at the Big Wild Goose Pagoda square, where a fountain show plays.

Day 5

Xi'an to ShanghaiOvernight ShanghaiPrivate vehicle with guide; flight to Shanghai

A full day after breakfast goes to the Terracotta Army, the clay soldiers buried to guard the tomb of China's first emperor. The tour includes Xi'an's scheduled shopping stop at a crockery factory. From there you transfer straight to the airport for the flight to Shanghai. You are met on arrival and taken to the hotel, so expect a long day.

Day 6

ShanghaiPrivate vehicle with guide

With one full day in Shanghai, the programme moves quickly after breakfast. It takes in People's Square, the market lanes of Yuyuan Bazaar and the 88th floor of the Jinmao Tower for the view over the city. A silk factory is the scheduled shopping stop. The day ends on the Bund, with free time for shopping on Nanjing Road.

Day 7

ShanghaiPrivate airport transfer

You have breakfast at the hotel on your last morning. A private transfer then takes you to the airport for your flight out. The tour services end at the airport. International and domestic flights are not part of the package and are booked separately.

Good to know

Frequently asked

Yes, because the route is arranged around it. You reach Xi'an on Day 4 and see the city wall and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda square that evening. Day 5 is a full-day tour to the Terracotta Army, and you fly to Shanghai afterwards. The trade-off is pace: there is no free time in Xi'an and Day 5 is long.
Yes. The local operator schedules one shopping stop in each of three cities on this route: a jade factory in Beijing, a crockery factory in Xi'an and a silk factory in Shanghai. These visits are part of the tour programme rather than optional extras, and there is no obligation to buy anything. We are confirming the operator's exact conditions for the stops and will set them out when you book.
No. International and domestic flight tickets are excluded, and train tickets are not listed among the inclusions either. Beijing to Xi'an can be done by flight or by high-speed train, which takes about five and a half hours, while Xi'an to Shanghai is a flight on this itinerary. We book these for you and quote them separately.
It covers the main entrance ticket at each sight named in the itinerary, such as the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Terracotta Army museum. Anything that needs a second ticket once you are inside, for example a separate exhibition hall or an optional ride, is not included and is paid on the spot if you choose it.
Several, all at extra cost and entirely your choice. In Beijing there is the Golden Mask Dynasty show or an acrobatic show; in Xi'an a Tang Dynasty show, without the meal; in Shanghai an acrobatic show or a Huangpu River cruise. Indian, halal and Chinese lunches and dinners, and a Peking duck dinner, can also be arranged. None of these is included in the package.
