Why you'll love this journey

  1. A through route with no backtracking: picked up at Mysuru, dropped at Kozhikode, with the two hill districts in between
  2. Namdroling Monastery at Bylakuppe on the drive in — in Mysuru district, a few kilometres short of Kushalnagar
  3. A coffee estate walk in Coorg, arranged at or near your stay, with no named estate promised
  4. Abbey Falls among coffee and cardamom estates, about 9 km from Madikeri, and Raja’s Seat for the sunset
  5. The forest road from Kodagu into Kerala past Tholpetty, with a sanctuary jeep safari offered only if slots allow
  6. The rock engravings of the Edakkal caves on Ambukuthi hill, reached by a steep climb on foot and closed on Mondays
  7. Banasura Sagar, which the district administration describes as India’s largest earthen dam, with boating on the reservoir
  8. Pookode Lake, a freshwater lake at 770 metres, on the last morning before the descent to the coast
Day by day

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Mysuru to CoorgOvernight CoorgPrivate vehicle

Your driver meets you in Mysuru — at the railway station, the airport or in the city — and heads west. The one stop is Bylakuppe, the Tibetan settlement in Mysuru district, for Namdroling Monastery, known as the Golden Temple; it is a working monastery, so dress and behave accordingly. Kushalnagar, in Kodagu, is a few kilometres on. We plan on about three hours of driving in all, more if your stay lies beyond Madikeri. The evening is free, and after a travel day it should be.

Day 2

CoorgPrivate vehicle

Start with a walk through a coffee estate, arranged at or near where you are staying: coffee under shade trees, pepper climbing the trunks. Then Abbey Falls, about 9 km from Madikeri, reached through estate land and worth it only when there is water behind it. The afternoon is Madikeri: the Omkareshwara temple of 1820, then Raja’s Seat, the garden viewpoint west of the bus stand, for sunset. Talacauvery, where the Kaveri rises, is a little under 50 km out; it can replace the falls and the town, but not join them.

Day 3

Coorg to WayanadOvernight WayanadPrivate vehicle

The road day, and the reason this trip exists as a route. Leave after breakfast and drive down through Kodagu, then into Kerala on the forest road that passes Tholpetty, the northern range of the Wayanad sanctuary. We plan on four to five hours, depending on where your two stays are. Tholpetty runs jeep safaris in a morning and an afternoon session; if your timing and the day’s slots allow, the afternoon one can be added, and we never promise it. Otherwise continue by Mananthavady to your stay.

Day 4

WayanadPrivate vehicle

Edakkal first, and early: entry is capped at 1,920 people a day and the gate can close to latecomers. The caves are high on Ambukuthi hill, and the way up is a steep climb on foot to rock walls covered in old engravings of figures and signs. After lunch the car crosses the plateau to Banasura Sagar, 21 km from Kalpetta, for the dam and a boat on the reservoir if you want one. Edakkal is closed on Mondays; when day 4 is a Monday, the caves move to the morning of day 5.

Day 5

Wayanad to KozhikodePrivate vehicle

Pookode Lake is on the way out, about 12 km from Kalpetta: a freshwater lake ringed by forest, with a path round it and boats from nine. An hour is enough. From there the road drops off the plateau by the Thamarassery ghat to the coast. Kozhikode’s airport is about 71 km from the lake and its railway station about 62 km; we allow about three hours to either, since the ghat is slow behind lorries. Book a departure from mid-afternoon onward — later if Edakkal has moved to this morning.

Good to know

Frequently asked

Because each is the practical railhead and airport for one end. Kodagu has no railway station and no airport; Mysuru’s airport is about 121 km from Madikeri and the monastery at Bylakuppe lies on that road. Kozhikode has the nearest airport and station to Wayanad. Running one way between them means no stretch of road is driven twice.
We plan on four to five hours, and that is an assumption, not a promise: the time depends on which part of Coorg you leave and which part of Wayanad you sleep in. The road is a winding hill and forest route, slower than its length suggests. We drive it in daylight and check for any forest-road timing restrictions when we quote.
Only if it can be had on the day. Tholpetty, on the road in from Kodagu, and Muthanga, near Sulthan Bathery, both run forest-department jeep safaris in limited morning and afternoon sessions. Slots, timings and closures are decided by the sanctuary, so we treat a safari as an optional extra, paid there, and never as a fixed part of the route.
For fit children, yes. For anyone with weak knees or a heart condition, probably not: the visit is a steep, sustained climb on foot, and the way down is the same. Those who stay below lose the engravings but not the day, since Banasura Sagar follows. The caves are closed on Mondays and admit a capped number each day, so we go early.
Neither is in the fixed plan. Kuruva has had repeated closures and visitor caps and we could not confirm a stable position, so we leave it out. Dubare can be added on day 1, but visitor rules there were reported to have been tightened in 2026, so what is permitted is confirmed at the time of quoting. We check both when we quote.
