Day-by-day itinerary
Met at the airport and driven into the city. The evening is Tkalčićeva street and the cafés of the lower town. Overnight in Zagreb.
A guided walk through the upper town — the cathedral, St Mark's tiled roof, the funicular and the Stone Gate — and the Dolac market. A free afternoon for the museums or the lakes at Jarun. Overnight in Zagreb.
South by private car to Plitvice, with three or four hours on the boardwalks between the terraced lakes and waterfalls and a boat across the largest, then on down through the mountains to the coast and Split by evening. Overnight in Split.
A guided walk of the old town inside the Roman palace — the peristyle, the cellars, the cathedral that was once a mausoleum — then the Riva promenade and Marjan hill for the view. Overnight in Split.
A boat day: the lavender island of Hvar and its town, a swim in the Blue Lagoon off Šolta, and the islands of the bay. Back to Split for the evening. Overnight in Split.
Three hours south along the Dalmatian coast, with stops at the viewpoints and, if you wish, the medieval town of Trogir or the oyster beds of Ston on the way. Into the old town at dusk. Overnight in Dubrovnik.
The city walls at opening, before the heat and the crowds, then the cable car up Mount Srđ for the view over the roofs to the islands. The lanes and the harbour in the afternoon. Overnight in Dubrovnik.
The ten-minute boat to Lokrum island for its gardens and swimming coves, a kayak below the walls, or a day trip to Mostar or Kotor by arrangement. A last dinner in the old town. Overnight in Dubrovnik.
