Day-by-day itinerary

1

A very early start from Thekkady for the forest road into Gavi, which is slow by design — the distance is modest and the drive is not. The day inside typically combines a forest drive, a guided walk and time at the lake, in an order the forest staff set on the day. Return to Thekkady by evening. · Thekkady · Gavi · Thekkady · overnight — · Private car · forest vehicle

Good to Know

Frequently asked

We cannot promise any sighting, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Gavi is a working forest reserve, not an enclosure — elephants, deer, hornbills and lion-tailed macaques are all present in the landscape, and whether you see any of them on a given day is a matter of chance, weather and time of year. The forest itself is the reason to come.
Access is controlled and the number of vehicles admitted each day is limited, so entry has to be booked in advance rather than arranged on arrival. Allocation is managed by the forest authorities, and there are days when it is simply not available. We book as early as we can and tell you promptly if a date cannot be held.
Because it is a forest road, not a highway. Speeds are low, the surface is rough in stretches, and there are checkpoints along the way. This is a long day with several hours in the vehicle, and travellers who dislike winding roads should think carefully before booking it.
Yes. Access is suspended during heavy monsoon and can be restricted at short notice for forest management or fire risk. These decisions sit with the forest department and are made on their timescale, not ours. We will rearrange rather than send you to a closed gate.
Covered shoes, full-length clothing in muted colours, and insect repellent. Leeches are common in and after the wet months. Carry water. Mobile coverage inside the reserve is poor to non-existent, so tell anyone expecting to reach you that you will be out of contact for the day.
It is a demanding day for both. The early start, the long slow drive and the walking involved make it better suited to travellers who actively want a forest day. For a gentler wildlife experience, the Periyar lake activities at Thekkady are the more sensible choice.
Personal photography is generally fine, but camera and drone fees may be charged separately on site and drones are restricted in the reserve. Follow your guide's instructions — there are places and moments where photography is not appropriate, particularly around animals.
