Day 1

Met at Keflavík and driven across the lava fields into Reykjavik, about forty-five minutes. The afternoon is for the old harbour, the Harpa concert hall on the waterfront and the view from the tower of Hallgrímskirkja, and the evening for the city's small restaurants. Day 2

The classic loop: Þingvellir, where the rift between the American and European plates is a walkable canyon and Iceland's first parliament met; the geothermal field at Geysir, where Strokkur erupts every few minutes; and Gullfoss, the double waterfall dropping into its gorge. Day 3

East along the coast under the glaciers: Seljalandsfoss, with the path behind the curtain of water, Skógafoss and its staircase, and the black-sand beach at Reynisfjara with its basalt columns and sea stacks — the waves here are dangerous and the guide will keep you back from them. Day 4

Further east across the sands beneath Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier, to the lagoon at Jökulsárlón, where icebergs calve from the glacier and drift out to sea, and the Diamond Beach where they wash back up on the black sand. Day 5

West again with the stops you missed or want twice — the Sólheimajökull glacier tongue, the Skógar folk museum, or the hot river at Reykjadalur for a walk and a soak. Frequently asked

Not on this package — the road days are in a private vehicle with a driver-guide who knows the conditions, which matters in Iceland: weather changes quickly, distances are long, and the roads along the south coast are exposed. Self-drive is a real option for confident drivers in summer and can be cheaper for a family; ask and we will price both versions.
Between September and April there is a reasonable chance, and the two nights on the south coast, away from city light, are the best opportunity — but no one can promise them. They need a clear, dark sky and solar activity on the same night. From May to August it never gets dark enough to see them at all. If the lights are your main reason for going, travel between October and March and add a night; if not, treat them as a bonus.
June to August has near-endless daylight, green landscapes and all roads open, and it is the easiest season for families. September and October bring autumn colours, the first northern lights and fewer visitors. November to March is winter: snow, ice, short days, the lights at their best and the waterfalls partly frozen — beautiful, but the driving is harder, which is why the driver-guide matters most then.
Cooler than most people expect even in summer — ten to fifteen degrees in July, with wind and rain that can arrive from nowhere — and below freezing in winter. The answer is layers: a windproof and waterproof outer jacket, a warm mid-layer, sturdy walking shoes and a hat and gloves in every season. We send a packing list with the booking. Swimwear for the Blue Lagoon and the hot pools, obviously.
For a couple who want something different from beaches and cities, it is one of the most memorable destinations there is: waterfalls, black sand, a glacier lagoon, the Blue Lagoon, and — with luck and the right season — the northern lights from your own hotel. We would usually choose a hotel with a hot pool or lagoon view for the south-coast nights and a boutique property in Reykjavik. Say it is a honeymoon when you enquire.
