Journey highlights

The moments that make this journey unforgettable — the signature experiences we have woven through every day, so the best of the destination is never left to chance.

  • Two countries in eight nights, starting in Slovenia.
  • Lake Bled, the Postojna caves and cliff-built Predjama castle in one day.
  • Plitvice Lakes National Park visited en route to the coast.
  • Diocletian's palace at Split and the walled old town of Dubrovnik.
  • A day trip across the border into Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

You are transferred privately from Ljubljana airport to your hotel. A walking tour follows, with a funicular ride up to the castle above the city. Ljubljana is one of the smallest capitals in Europe and its centre is closed to traffic, which makes it unusually pleasant to walk. · Ljubljana

Day 2

A full day out from Ljubljana. Lake Bled has an island church in the middle of it and a castle on the cliff above. The Postojna caves run for kilometres underground with an electric railway through them, and Predjama castle is built into the mouth of a cave in a vertical cliff. · Ljubljana

Day 3

You travel from Ljubljana to Zagreb by coach on a shared basis, crossing from Slovenia into Croatia. A walking tour of Zagreb follows — the upper town with its cathedral and the squares of the lower town are close together and best seen on foot. · Zagreb

Day 4

You travel south, visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park on the way — sixteen terraced lakes linked by waterfalls and crossed on boardwalks laid just above the water — and continue on to Zadar on the coast. · Zadar

Day 5

A walking tour of Zadar on a shared basis. The old town occupies a small peninsula and can be crossed on foot in twenty minutes. A sunset cruise can be arranged locally at a supplement. The rest of the day is free. · Zadar

Day 6

You travel down the coast to Split by coach on a shared basis. A walking tour covers the old town, built inside and around the walls of Diocletian's palace — a Roman imperial residence that has been continuously inhabited ever since. · Split

Day 7

You travel on to Dubrovnik by coach on a shared basis, and a walking tour follows inside the walled old town. It is closed to traffic and compact enough to learn in a single circuit; the walls themselves are what people remember. · Dubrovnik

Day 8

A day trip across the border into Bosnia and Herzegovina on a shared basis. You will need your passport, and a Schengen visa that permits you to re-enter Croatia afterwards — the most important practical point on this itinerary. · Dubrovnik

Day 9

Breakfast at the hotel, then check out and a private transfer from your hotel to Dubrovnik airport for your onward flight. Allow the check-in time your airline requires.
