Day-by-day itinerary
Met at the airport and driven into the city. The first evening is the Ramblas and the lanes of the Gothic Quarter, with tapas somewhere off the Plaça Reial. Overnight in Barcelona.
The Sagrada Família with a timed entry in the morning, then Park Güell above the city, and the Passeig de Gràcia for Casa Batlló and La Pedrera on the walk back. A guided walk of the Gothic Quarter and the cathedral in the late afternoon. Overnight in Barcelona.
A half-day to Montserrat, the serrated mountain an hour from the city with the Benedictine monastery and the Black Madonna high on its shelf, reached by rack railway or cable car. The afternoon is Barceloneta and the beach, or Montjuïc for the view. Overnight in Barcelona.
Two and a half hours across the plateau to Madrid. The afternoon is the Royal Palace with a timed entry, the Plaza Mayor and the Puerta del Sol, and the evening the tapas bars of La Latina. Overnight in Madrid.
Half an hour by train to Toledo, the hill city above the Tagus with its cathedral, its synagogues and El Greco — a full day walked slowly. Back to Madrid for the Prado in the late afternoon, when the light is best and the galleries emptier. Overnight in Madrid.
South across La Mancha and through the Sierra Morena to Seville in two and a half hours. A guided walk of the Santa Cruz quarter in the afternoon, and a flamenco performance in the evening. Overnight in Seville.
The cathedral and the climb of the Giralda tower, the Alcázar palace and its gardens with a timed entry, and the Plaza de España in the afternoon. The evening on the river by the Torre del Oro, or in Triana across the bridge. Overnight in Seville.
An hour's flight west to Lisbon. The afternoon is a guided walk of the Alfama and the castle hill, the tram 28 route and the viewpoints, with dinner in the Bairro Alto. Overnight in Lisbon.
A private car to Sintra for the Pena Palace on its hilltop and the Moorish castle walls, then down to the Atlantic at Cabo da Roca and along the coast to Cascais. Back into Lisbon through Belém for the Jerónimos monastery, the tower and the custard tarts. Overnight in Lisbon.
