Tirthan, Kasol & Manali — Six Nights in Kullu's Three Valleys

Six nights across the three valleys of Kullu district that most Himachal packages never enter: two on the Tirthan river at the gate of the Great Himalayan National Park, a World Heritage Site since 2014, with a day walk in its ecozone and the road up to Jalori Pass and Serolsar Lake; two at Kasol on the Parvati, with the Kheerganga trek to the hot springs above Barshaini and the gurdwara at Manikaran; and two at Manali for Solang and the Atal Tunnel to Sissu. One state, three rivers, three very different valleys, and a day of walking in each — an adventure product for people who want the hills rather than the hill stations.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

North-east from Chandigarh through Mandi and the Aut tunnel, then off the Manali highway and up the Banjar road into the Tirthan valley — about 270 km and eight hours, the last of them on a single-lane road beside a river that runs clear and fast over boulders. The stay is a riverside homestay or small lodge near Gushaini, at the western gate of the Great Himalayan National Park. Nothing is scheduled after arrival except the river, which is enough. · Chandigarh to Tirthan Valley · overnight Tirthan Valley · Private car

Day 2

A guided day walk in the park's ecozone — the buffer belt where the villages are — from Gushaini up the Tirthan gorge, with the permit issued by the park office at Sai Ropa. The trail follows the river through oak and pine, past the last hamlets, and turns back at a point set by the group's pace; six to eight hours with lunch by the water. The park holds snow leopard, Himalayan tahr and the western tragopan, none of which a day walker should expect to see, and a river full of trout, which the licensed anglers do. Evening at the lodge. · Tirthan Valley and the GHNP ecozone · overnight Tirthan Valley · On foot

Day 3

Up the Banjar road to Jalori Pass at 3,120 m — closed by snow in winter, which is why this product is sold in the shoulder seasons — and the level forest walk from the pass to Serolsar Lake, about five kilometres each way through oak and rhododendron, with the small temple at the water. Back down through Jibhi, with its waterfall a short walk off the road, and then the road round by Bhuntar and up the Parvati to Kasol, about four hours. Kasol sits at 1,580 m on the river; the evening is the Chalal footbridge and the cafés. · Jalori Pass to Kasol · overnight Kasol · Private car and on foot

Day 4

The trek day. A car to Barshaini at the roadhead above Kasol, and then the trail up the Parvati gorge to Kheerganga — about twelve kilometres up to the meadow and its hot-spring pool at around 2,950 m, and the same back, seven to nine hours on foot with a guide. It is a steady climb rather than a technical one, and the springs at the top are the reward. Those who want a gentler day take Tosh, the village at the roadhead, and Manikaran instead; both are on the same road. Back to Kasol for a late dinner. · Barshaini and Kheerganga · overnight Kasol · Private car and on foot

Day 5

Manikaran first, 3.5 km up the road, where springs come out of the ground close to boiling within metres of a snow-fed river and the gurdwara cooks its langar in them — a site sacred to Sikhs and Hindus alike. Then down the Parvati, across the Beas at Bhuntar and up the main valley by the Naggar road: the castle of the Kullu rajas in its timber-bonded stone, and the Roerich house below it. Into Manali by late afternoon, about three hours in all. · Kasol to Manali · overnight Manali · Private car

Day 6

The reward day at the valley head: Solang in the morning, with paragliding and the ropeway in the warm months, then the south portal of the Atal Tunnel 25 km from Manali and the nine kilometres under the mountain to Sissu in Lahaul, open in every month with no permit. Lunch by the Chandra river and back through the tunnel for Vashisht's hot springs — the third set of springs on this trip — and a last evening in Old Manali. · Manali, Solang and Sissu · overnight Manali · Private car

Day 7

The long descent of the Beas and out through Mandi to the plains, about eight hours to Chandigarh and more to Delhi, with nothing else asked of the day. Your Live Traveller journey ends at the airport or the station. Bhuntar airport is an hour below Manali if you prefer to fly, on the understanding that the valley cancels flights often. · Manali to Chandigarh or Delhi · Private car

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Comfortable with a full day on foot, twice. The park ecozone walk is six to eight hours on a river trail with modest climbing, and Kheerganga is about twelve kilometres each way with a steady ascent to around 2,950 m — a long day rather than a hard one, but a long day. Serolsar is a gentle forest walk. Anyone unsure takes Tosh and Manikaran on the trek day instead; the guide and the car are there either way.
March to June and September to November. Jalori Pass is closed by snow from around December to March, so the pass day cannot run in winter, and the Kheerganga trail is slippery and prone to landslips in the July–August monsoon, when the Parvati also runs dangerously high. Autumn is the park's own best season — September to November, when the animals come lower — and the trout season runs through it.
Not the snow leopard — it lives far above the ecozone a day walker reaches, and no honest operator promises it. Trout, yes: the Tirthan is one of India's established fly-fishing rivers, permits are issued locally in the season and we arrange rods and a ghillie on request. The ecozone walk reliably gives the gorge, the forest and the river, and the birdlife is excellent.
Kasol itself is easy — a small riverside village at 1,580 m with cafés and the Chalal footbridge — and Manikaran and Tosh are reached by road. The Kheerganga day is the demanding part, and it is optional by design. Families with older children and reasonably fit older travellers do this trip happily with Tosh substituted; it is not a product for toddlers, and we say so.
Because the walking should come first, while legs and weather are fresh, and because Manali is the valley's exit as well as its head — the airport at Bhuntar and the coach and road to the plains all leave from below it. Ending at Manali also puts the tunnel to Sissu and Solang at the end as the reward, and the route runs in one direction with no backtracking.
