Five Nights in Tokyo — The City, Mount Fuji and Time of Your Own

You arrive at the airport and are driven to your hotel by private car. Tokyo takes some adjusting to — it is less one city than a run of districts, each with its own centre. The rest of the day is free to settle in and get over the flight.

A full-day panoramic coach tour of Tokyo on a seat-in-coach basis, with lunch provided as part of the tour. The day gives you the shape of the city — which districts sit where, and how the older eastern side differs from the modern centre — which makes the free days that follow far easier to use well.

No touring is scheduled today. With the city mapped out from yesterday, the day is yours to spend in whichever district drew you. Anything you choose to arrange is at your own cost, and the tour desk can point you at the options.

A full day southwest to Mount Fuji and Hakone, running as a round trip by coach from central Tokyo, with lunch provided as part of the tour. Hakone sits in an active volcanic caldera and on a clear day Fuji stands over the whole of it — though whether the mountain shows itself is entirely down to the weather.

No touring is scheduled. A second unstructured day is what separates this itinerary from a standard city break — time enough to go back to something properly rather than tick it off. Anything you arrange is at your own cost.

Breakfast at the hotel, then check out and a private transfer to the airport for your onward flight. Your onward flight is not part of this package, so allow the check-in time your airline requires — Narita in particular is a long way from the city and the transfer takes longer than people expect.
