Day by day

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Trivandrum · VarkalaOvernight VarkalaPrivate airport transfer · 1 hr

Met at Trivandrum airport and driven up the coast to Varkala, about an hour. The rest of the day is deliberately unplanned — the cliff path is best walked at your own pace on the first evening, and the light on the headland is at its best an hour before sunset.

Day 2

VarkalaOn foot · short private transfers

Morning on the cliff and down to Papanasam beach, which is a working religious site as well as a beach — families come here to perform last rites, and it should be walked quietly and photographed with care, or not at all. Afternoon is given to an Ayurvedic consultation and a first treatment.

Day 3

Varkala · KappilOvernight VarkalaPrivate car · 1 hr return

A slower day built around a second treatment, with the afternoon free for the coast south of Varkala — Kappil, where a backwater runs close to the sea, and the quieter beaches on that road.

Day 4

Varkala · TrivandrumPrivate car · 1 hr

A final morning on the cliff before the transfer back to Trivandrum for your onward flight. The drive is about an hour; we build in margin for the coast road rather than cutting it fine.

Good to know

Frequently asked

It varies by beach and by season, and it should not be assumed. The main cliff beach has strong currents at times and lifeguard cover is not continuous along the whole shore. Swim only where flags and lifeguards indicate it is safe, ask your stay about conditions on the day, and treat the monsoon months as unsafe for swimming regardless of how calm the water looks from the cliff.
We schedule consultation and treatment time with qualified practitioners, and we can arrange longer programmes. What we will not do is promise a medical outcome. Ayurveda here is rest, diet and bodywork over consecutive days, and it is best judged as that. If you are being treated for a specific condition, speak to your own doctor before booking, and tell the centre about any medication you take.
Because treatment works on consecutive days and a two-night stay leaves one usable day. Three nights gives two full days on the cliff, two treatment slots and an unhurried arrival, which is the difference between a rest and a dash.
Not really, and it is worth understanding before you go. It is a place where families perform funeral rites, and you may well see a ceremony taking place. It is entirely acceptable to walk there, but photograph with real care — never people at a ceremony — and dress modestly.
June to September is the southwest monsoon: heavy rain, rough sea, many cliff-top places closed or running reduced services, and swimming unsafe. It is green and cheap and quiet, but a beach-focused trip does not work then. October to March is the season this journey is written for.
Yes, and it works well. Varkala sits at the southern end of the state, so it pairs naturally with Kollam and the backwaters to the north, or with a Trivandrum arrival at the start of a longer Kerala route. Tell us your total time and we will shape the order around it.
It can be, with caveats. The cliff path is unfenced in places and the drop is real, so it needs constant supervision with small children. The beaches with lifeguard cover are a better base than the cliff itself for a family, and we would plan the stay accordingly.
