Day by day

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

VisakhapatnamPrivate transfer

Your driver meets you at the airport or at Visakhapatnam railway station. Flights now use the new airport at Bhogapuram, well to the north-east of the city, so the transfer is a good deal longer than it was from the old city airport; we confirm the time when we quote. After check-in, the late afternoon goes to RK Beach and INS Kursura, a Soviet-built submarine the Navy retired in 2001 and set on the sand as a museum, with a TU-142M naval aircraft displayed opposite. The submarine is listed as closed on Mondays and opens only from the afternoon; if your arrival falls on a Monday we move it to day two.

Day 2

VisakhapatnamPrivate vehicle

The morning starts at Simhachalam, the hill temple of Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha about 16 km from the city; darshan queues decide how long it takes. From there the car crosses to the coast for Kailasagiri, a hill park above the sea with a ropeway from the foot, and continues to the beach at Rushikonda, 8 km out. If time allows, the excavated Buddhist monastery sites on Thotlakonda and Bavikonda hills lie further along the same road; alternatively the afternoon can go south to Yarada beach. Choose one — the two are in opposite directions.

Day 3

Visakhapatnam to Araku ValleyOvernight Araku ValleyPrivate vehicle

An early start for the drive inland. Araku is about 115 km away and the road climbs through forest in the second half; allow roughly three and a half to four hours of driving, plus stops. Borra Caves, a limestone system some 10 km off the main road, is the principal halt, with the coffee slopes of Ananthagiri and the Galikonda viewpoint on the way up if the weather is clear. You reach Araku in the afternoon. The Tribal Museum and Padmapuram Gardens follow if they are still open, and the evening is yours in the valley.

Day 4

Araku Valley to VisakhapatnamPrivate vehicle

The early morning is the quiet part of the day in Araku, before visitors arrive from the coast. Anything missed yesterday — the museum, the gardens, the valley’s small coffee museum — fits before a mid-morning departure, and the Chaparai cascades are possible only if your onward travel is late. The car then returns down the ghat to Visakhapatnam railway station or the airport. This is a long road day: please book an evening departure, and tell us your timings before you confirm so that we can set the leaving time from Araku.

Good to know

Frequently asked

Possibly, in one direction. Indian Railways runs a passenger service on the Visakhapatnam–Kirandul line with Vistadome coaches, and seats in them sell out. We plan the trip by road and treat rail as an option subject to availability, confirmed at the time of quoting. If you take it, your car meets you at Araku, and Borra Caves moves to the return drive.
The district administration gives the distance as about 115 km. We plan for roughly three and a half to four hours each way without stops, more with Borra Caves included. The upper half is a winding ghat road, so travellers prone to motion sickness should prepare for it. Rain, fog and weekend traffic all lengthen the journey.
Yes for those three, with an early start from Visakhapatnam on day three. Borra is visited on the way up and the museum and Padmapuram Gardens on arrival or the next morning. What one night does not comfortably hold is Katiki waterfall, which needs a jeep and a walk; we leave it out unless you add a second night.
The cooler, drier months from about November to February suit both the coast and the valley. India's disaster management authority notes that tropical cyclones occur mainly in May–June and October–November and mostly strike the east coast, so trips in those months can be disrupted at short notice. The monsoon makes the ghat road slower and the caves slippery.
Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram, in Vizianagaram district. Airlines moved their Visakhapatnam flights there in August 2026 and it keeps the code VTZ. It lies well outside the city to the north-east, so transfers take longer than older guides suggest; we confirm the time when we quote. Pickup and drop there are included, and so is Visakhapatnam railway station if you come by train.
