Which Maldives island fits your budget and your trip?

By Live Traveller8 min readPublished October 24, 2026

How budget, transfers and villas shape the choice of a Maldives island, with indicative nightly rates for budget, premium and luxury stays, and what suits honeymooners, families and snorkellers.

The short answer

In the Maldives you are choosing an island more than a country. Rates tend to rise as islands become more remote and villas more private, though not always. A nearer island with a speedboat transfer often keeps both cost and journey time down, while a far atoll reached by seaplane often costs more and offers more seclusion. Decide your level first, then choose the island that suits who is travelling and what they want to do.

This guide helps you narrow the choice. It does not rank every resort in the Maldives, and it does not name individual resorts.

The three levels at a glance

About these rates. These are indicative figures from public resort listings on two booking portals (Booking.com and Agoda), checked in October 2026 for a December 2026 stay, for two adults sharing a room. They are not Live Traveller package prices: our packages are quoted separately and are not priced at these rates. They are before taxes, service charges and transfers. Actual prices depend on dates, room category, occupancy and availability, and because these figures are for a December stay, other months can differ. We read a sample of listings, not every resort, so the ranges are a guide to the market, not a complete price distribution.

In the table, the island, getting-there and villa rows are general tendencies, not findings from the listings; only the rate row comes from them. The island, the resort and your dates change everything. Taxes and charges can add a lot to the displayed rate: in the Booking.com sample we checked, the separate taxes-and-charges line was roughly 35 to 55 percent of the displayed price on most listings, lower on a few (mainly all-inclusive rates) and higher on one. A transfer is often charged separately from the room rate, and a seaplane transfer can add noticeably to the cost, so a far island may cost more than its room rate suggests.

Budget-conscious: keep it near, short and simple

Who it suits: couples on a first trip, families, and anyone with only four or five nights.

Look for an island in the North or South Malé Atolls, reached by speedboat. You lose less of the holiday to the journey, and the transfer is usually simpler.

Choose a shorter stay on a single island rather than a split across two.

Choose off-peak dates. Our Maldives guide describes August to October as the quietest and best-value months, with rain arriving in bursts rather than all day.

Look for a rate that includes breakfast, with lunches and dinners planned around what you want to spend.

What you may give up: some seclusion, as nearer islands can have more neighbouring resorts and boat traffic.

Tell us your travel dates, preferred experience and budget, and we’ll help you explore the available options.

Premium: choose the villa or the reef

Who it suits: honeymooners, couples marking an anniversary, and families who want a calm lagoon and some extras.

Decide what you are paying extra for: an overwater villa, a very good house reef, or a quieter lagoon. You may not need all three.

Pick a transfer that suits your arrival time. Trans Maldivian Airways, a leading seaplane operator, says it flies only from sunrise to sunset, so a late arrival can change your plans.

Match the length of stay to your plans. Our Maldives guide suggests four to seven nights for couples and five to seven for families, depending on how much you want to do.

Book overwater villas early for peak months. Our guide notes that the best sell out many months ahead.

Luxury: choose the atoll

Who it suits: travellers who want remoteness, couples celebrating something special, and anyone with a week to spend doing very little.

Look for a far-atoll island, often reached by seaplane. These tend to have fewer boats and fewer neighbouring islands and, in the right atoll and season, marine life such as mantas or whale sharks.

Seven nights suits travellers who want to do very little. Our private-island package notes that a week on one small island suits people who want to do nothing, while travellers who like variety may find it long.

Allow time for the journey. The transfer to a far atoll takes longer than to a near island, and it is part of the cost.

Then add your traveller type

Honeymooners: choose the villa and the privacy first, whichever level you are at.

Families with young children: put a short transfer and a calm, shallow lagoon ahead of everything else, even at the luxury end.

Divers and snorkellers: choose by house reef and atoll, not by villa. See the snorkelling question below.

Short on time: stay near Malé at any level.

Questions to ask before you book

1. How do I get to the island, how long does it take, and is it daylight only?

2. What is the house reef like for the people travelling?

3. Which villa type is in the price?

4. What does the rate include for meals, and what does it not? Meal arrangements differ by resort.

5. Are the green tax and any service charges in the price? Resorts charge USD 12 per person per night in green tax, and children under two are exempt (rate in force from 1 January 2025 according to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority’s website, read on 24 October 2026; confirm before you travel).

Mistakes to avoid

Choosing the cheapest island without checking the transfer time.

Booking a far atoll for only two or three nights.

Paying for an overwater villa, a far island and a long stay all at once without deciding which matters most.

Assuming meals, drinks, diving and spa are included.

What kind of Maldives resort suits honeymooners?

It depends on what matters most to the two of you: privacy, a villa with direct lagoon access, a good house reef, or a quiet island. Many couples look at an overwater villa or at one island for the whole stay, so there are no moves or repacking. Our guide suggests four to seven nights for couples. Ask how the island is reached, because the journey is part of the experience.

What should families prioritise?

A short, simple transfer, a calm and shallow lagoon, and a villa layout that suits your family. If your children would use one, ask whether the resort has a kids’ club, and ask about any age limits. Speedboat transfers are generally simpler than seaplanes for families, and seaplanes fly only from sunrise to sunset. Children under two are exempt from the Maldives green tax.

How much does a Maldives resort cost per night?

As an indicative guide, public resort listings checked in October 2026 for a December 2026 stay showed roughly ₹10,000 to ₹30,000 per night for two at the budget-conscious end, ₹30,000 to ₹90,000 at the premium level, and ₹90,000 and above for luxury. These are before taxes, service charges and transfers, they are not Live Traveller package prices, and they depend on dates, room category, occupancy and availability. They come from a sample of listings, not every resort.

What additional costs should I budget for?

Beyond the room rate, ask about taxes and service charges, the transfer (speedboat, seaplane, or a domestic flight and a boat), meals beyond what your rate includes, drinks, excursions, diving and spa treatments. Our four Maldives packages list daily breakfast as the included meal, so lunches, most dinners and drinks are extra unless a package says otherwise. They also list international and domestic flights, visa fees, travel insurance and optional experiences as not included. Resorts also charge a green tax of USD 12 per person per night, with children under two exempt.

Is a speedboat or a seaplane transfer better?

Neither is better for everyone. The usual pattern is that resorts near Velana International Airport are reached by speedboat and farther ones often by seaplane, with a domestic flight plus a short boat ride as a third option. Speedboats suit nearer islands and shorter holidays. Seaplanes are part of the experience for many travellers, but Trans Maldivian Airways says it flies only from sunrise to sunset and advises reaching the Maldives by about 15:30 local time for a same-day connection. Its FAQ lists 25 kg per person (20 kg checked and 5 kg hand luggage), a 32 kg maximum per bag and USD 5 per kg plus taxes for excess. Other operators and resorts may differ, so confirm with your resort.

Should snorkellers choose the house reef or the atoll?

Both matter, for different reasons. The house reef decides how easily you can snorkel from the beach without a boat, and reef quality varies a lot between resorts. The atoll decides what you may see further out. Mantas gather at Baa Atoll’s Hanifaru Bay during the south-west monsoon, roughly May to December according to a UN Convention on Migratory Species factsheet, with peak activity around July to September according to Manta Trust research. Timing varies, and access to the bay is regulated, with limits on visitor numbers. Research by the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme describes a whale shark aggregation in the South Ari Atoll area that persists through the year, mostly young males. Nothing in open water is guaranteed. Ask the resort about its reef and the season you will travel.

Is an overwater villa worth the extra cost?

It depends on how much you want the lagoon at your door and the privacy that usually comes with it. The price difference varies by resort and season, so ask for the overwater and beach-villa rates at the same resort for your dates before deciding. If you expect to spend most of your time out on the island or the water, a beach villa may suit you equally well. Book overwater villas early for peak months.
