Day-by-day itinerary
You are met on arrival and escorted to your hotel on a private basis. Vienna is a city built for walking, and the historic centre is dense enough that a first evening stroll covers a surprising amount. A Danube river cruise can be arranged locally if you want to fill the evening. · Vienna
A city tour of Vienna including Schönbrunn Palace, the Habsburg summer residence on the edge of the city. You then make your own way to Vienna station for the train west to Salzburg, and from Salzburg station to your hotel. The evening brings a Best of Mozart concert at the Hohensalzburg fortress above the old town. · Salzburg
A full-day Sound of Music tour out of Salzburg. It runs through the lake country south of the city and the locations used in the film, which are also simply some of the best scenery in Austria. Salzburg itself is small and its old town is compact enough to walk in what remains of the day. · Salzburg
You make your own way to Salzburg station for the train to Innsbruck, roughly one and a half to two and a half hours depending on the service. Innsbruck sits in a valley with mountains rising directly from the edge of town. A Tyrolean folk evening can be arranged locally. · Innsbruck
A visit to Swarovski Kristallwelten, about thirty minutes' drive from Innsbruck. It is part museum and part art installation, built around the Chambers of Wonder. The rest of the day is free in Innsbruck, where the old town and the Golden Roof are within walking distance of most hotels. · Innsbruck
You make your own way to Innsbruck station for the long train back east to Vienna, roughly four and a half to five hours. It is the most scenic leg of the trip, running through the Alps before the country flattens towards the capital. A Vienna hop-on hop-off tour can be arranged locally. · Vienna
Breakfast at the hotel, then check out and a private transfer to Vienna airport for your onward flight. Allow the check-in time your airline requires.
