Good to Know

Frequently asked

A week covers the country's three distinct faces: the imperial capital, the baroque city under the mountains, and the Tyrol. Vienna gets three nights because it needs them; Salzburg three because Hallstatt and the lakes are day trips from it; Innsbruck one as the Alpine finish. What a week does not include is the Zillertal or the far south around Carinthia, which are extensions rather than omissions.
You arrive into Vienna, which has direct flights from India, and leave from Innsbruck, which connects through Vienna or Frankfurt — or from Munich, ninety minutes away by train, which many travellers find cheaper. Your specialist checks both against your fares before quoting, and the last night moves to Munich if that works better.
Not as standard, because it divides travellers: some would not miss it, others have no interest. The film locations — the Mirabell gardens, the lake at Leopoldskron, the gazebo at Hellbrunn and the church at Mondsee — are easily added as a half-day, and the Hallstatt day already passes through the lake country the film was shot in. Say the word and it goes into the quote.
Easier than its reputation. Vienna and Salzburg both have good Indian restaurants near the centre, Viennese cafés serve substantial vegetarian dishes, and hotel breakfasts are large buffets. We mark the reliable vegetarian options on your day-sheets and can pre-arrange Indian dinners for any evening you would like them.
May to September for the lakes and mountains, with June and September the most comfortable. December has some of the best Christmas markets in Europe in all three cities and snow in Innsbruck, and is a favourite for winter honeymoons. Late July and August bring the Salzburg Festival, which is wonderful to be in the city for and expensive to stay during; book early or avoid those weeks.
