Day-by-day itinerary
Met at the airport and driven into the city. The first evening is St Stephen's Cathedral, the Graben and a coffee house, which is the right introduction to Vienna. Overnight in Vienna.
Schönbrunn Palace with a timed entry in the morning — the state rooms and the gardens up to the Gloriette — then a guided walk of the Hofburg, the Spanish Riding School and the Opera. The evening on the Ringstrasse. Overnight in Vienna.
West along the Danube to the Wachau: the abbey at Melk, a boat between the vineyard terraces to Dürnstein, and the wine villages. Back to Vienna for the Belvedere and Klimt if there is time. Overnight in Vienna.
Two and a half hours west to Salzburg. A guided walk of the old town — the cathedral, Getreidegasse and Mozart's birthplace — and the funicular up to the fortress for the view over the domes to the mountains. Overnight in Salzburg.
A private car to Hallstatt early, before the day-trippers: the lakeside village, the skywalk and the salt mine for those who want it. The lakes of the Salzkammergut and St Wolfgang on the way back. Overnight in Salzburg.
