Day 2

A morning flight of an hour and a quarter to Rovaniemi on the Arctic Circle. The afternoon at Santa Claus Village — the man himself, the post office and the line painted across the ground — and the first aurora hunt after dinner if the forecast is good. Overnight in Rovaniemi. · Rovaniemi · Flight & private transfer

Day 3

A husky safari through the forest in the morning, with a turn at driving the sled, and a reindeer sleigh ride with a Sámi herder in the afternoon, learning how the animals are kept. The Arktikum museum for the science of the north if the cold gets too much. Overnight in Rovaniemi. · Rovaniemi · Private transfer

A two-hour guided snowmobile safari across frozen lakes and forest trails, two to a machine, with thermal kit provided. A free afternoon for the shops and cafés of the town, and a sauna at the hotel. Overnight in Rovaniemi. · Rovaniemi

Day 5

A private car three hours north through the forest to Saariselkä, at the edge of the Urho Kekkonen National Park. Check in to a glass-roofed cabin, dinner at the resort, and the night sky from your bed — with a guided hunt by minibus if the lights are forecast elsewhere. Overnight in Saariselkä. · Saariselkä · Private transfer

Day 6

A snowshoe or fat-bike outing on the fells in the morning, or nothing at all; the resort's sauna and the second aurora night. Overnight in Saariselkä. · Saariselkä

Frequently asked

No one can promise it, and anyone who does is selling something. What this itinerary does is give you the best odds: five nights above the Arctic Circle between late August and early April, two of them in a glass-roofed cabin far from town light, and two guided hunts that drive to wherever the sky is clearest. Most travellers on a five-night stay in the season see them at least once; some see them every night, a few not at all. The days — huskies, reindeer, snowmobiles, Santa — are worth the trip on their own.
For the lights, late August to early April, with the darkest and most reliable skies from October to March. For snow and the full set of activities, December to March. For families visiting Santa, the weeks before Christmas are the most atmospheric and the most expensive; January and February have the same snow, fewer people and better prices. Late March adds daylight and milder cold.
Between minus five and minus twenty-five degrees in the winter months, colder on the snowmobile. Every activity in this package includes a thermal overall, boots, gloves and a balaclava, so you need only warm layers underneath: thermal base layers, a fleece, a woollen hat and thick socks. We send a packing list with the booking. The glass cabins are heated.
It is one of the best family trips in Europe: Santa in person, a husky ride with a child seat in the sled, reindeer, snow, and the Arctic Circle crossing. The snowmobile has age and licence rules — children ride as passengers in a sled behind the guide — and the aurora hunts run late, so families with young children often take the early one. Tell us the ages and we adjust the activity days.
Rovaniemi has Santa, the airport and the activity operators, and it is a real town with town light. Saariselkä, three hours further north, is a small resort at the edge of a national park with almost no light pollution, which is where the glass cabins are and where the aurora odds are best. The two together give you the family day out and the honeymoon night sky in one trip.
