Grapevine, Texas: Historic Main Street and the Lake, 3 Nights

Grapevine sits right on the northern edge of Dallas–Fort Worth International, so the hotel shuttle has you at the door soon after you clear the airport. The town is named after the mustang grapevines that used to grow wild across these prairies, and its Main Street keeps a run of 19th-century brick fronts. Walk it in the evening for a first dinner; the restaurants cluster between the old depot and the town square.

The day is free until the evening. Fort Worth is about half an hour away by car, and its Stockyards district is the easy win: brick cattle pens, western-wear shops, and the longhorn herd driven down Exchange Avenue on most days. The evening suits a guided sunset paddle, which can be arranged: clear-bottomed kayaks go out on Grapevine Lake as the sun drops, the guide points out herons and turtles along the shore, and after dark LED lights turn the hulls into lanterns on the water.

Today suits the guided food and winery walk, available to add; it generally runs on Fridays, starting after midday, so we plan dates around it. A guide leads a small group through the historic district with stories of the town: smoked brisket at a barbecue joint, Tex-Mex, dessert in Harvest Hall and a glass of Texas wine with a paired bite in a winery tasting room. Come hungry; tastings replace lunch.

Breakfast, then check out and take the hotel shuttle back across to DFW. The airport is vast, with a train linking its terminals, so leave a little more time than the short distance suggests. With a late flight, the Sixth Floor Museum in Dealey Plaza, on the assassination of President Kennedy, is the classic Dallas morning, about half an hour away.
