Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Met at the airport and driven into the city. The evening is for Plaka, the old quarter beneath the floodlit Acropolis, and a first Greek dinner in its lanes. Overnight in Athens. · Athens · Private airport transfer

Day 2

The Acropolis early with a guide, before the heat and the coaches — the Parthenon, the Erechtheion and the view across the city — then the Acropolis Museum below it after lunch. The afternoon is Monastiraki and the flea market, or the Ancient Agora. Overnight in Athens. · Athens

Day 3

Out to the Cyclades and up onto the caldera rim, with a private transfer from the port or airport. The afternoon is Fira and the cliff path towards Imerovigli, with the first sunset over the caldera from your own terrace or the nearest bar. Overnight on Santorini. · Santorini · Fast ferry or flight

Day 4

The northern village with its blue domes and white lanes, quietest in the morning, and the sunset it is known for — worth taking a position an hour early. The afternoon between can be the little port at Ammoudi below the village for a fish lunch. Overnight on Santorini. · Santorini · Private car

Day 5

A catamaran afternoon along the cliffs, with a stop at the volcanic islets in the middle of the bay and the hot springs beside them, and lunch on board. The light on the caldera walls from the water is the reason to do it. Overnight on Santorini. · Santorini · Catamaran

Day 6

The Bronze Age town at Akrotiri, buried by the eruption and roofed over for visitors, then the red beach beneath it and the black-sand coast at Perissa for the afternoon. A last caldera evening. Overnight on Santorini. · Santorini · Private car

Day 7

A private transfer to the airport for your flight home via Athens. · Santorini · Private transfer

Good to Know

Frequently asked

The flight takes forty-five minutes and the fast ferry five to eight hours depending on the boat, so on time alone the flight wins. The ferry arrives beneath the caldera cliffs, which is the better arrival, and it can be cheaper in season. We book whichever your dates and budget favour and say which we have chosen. Either way the transfers at both ends are private and included.
For the view, the caldera rim: Oia for the sunset and the postcard, Imerovigli for the quietest and highest stretch, Fira for the most restaurants and easiest transport. Caldera-view rooms cost considerably more than rooms a street back, and we will show you both when we quote. Families and anyone who wants a beach should consider the east coast at Kamari or Perissa instead.
For a honeymoon, no — it is the right length to do the island once and then have a day for nothing. The catamaran, Oia, and Akrotiri with the beaches each take a day, and the fourth is the one most couples say they were glad of. If you would rather use it on a second island, the eight-night Athens, Santorini & Mykonos journey adds Mykonos instead.
May, June, September and early October are the months we recommend — warm, the sea swimmable from June, and Santorini busy but not overwhelmed. July and August are hot, crowded and at their most expensive. April and late October are quieter and cheaper with some restaurants closed; in winter the island largely shuts and the trip should be Athens and the mainland instead.
Two nights is the minimum that lets you see the Acropolis properly on a fresh morning rather than straight off an overnight flight. The first evening in Plaka beneath the floodlit rock is a good beginning to Greece, and the second day is the Acropolis and its museum with a guide, which is the best way to understand what you are looking at. Flying straight through is possible but you lose the reason most people come.
