Good to Know

Frequently asked

Santorini is the caldera: cliffs, sunsets, views, and a landscape unlike anywhere else. Mykonos is the beach island: sand, sea, Chora's lanes and an evening scene that runs late. They are different holidays two hours apart by ferry, which is why the combination works — three nights of one, then three of the other. If you only want one, the six-night Athens & Santorini journey is the caldera alone.
The Cyclades are exposed to the summer meltemi wind, and July and August afternoons can be choppy enough to feel on the faster boats. Crossings are rarely cancelled, but they can be delayed. We book morning sailings where possible, when the sea is calmer, and a larger conventional ferry rather than the fastest catamaran for anyone who is prone to seasickness — say so when you enquire.
Yes — it is the reason to be on Mykonos beyond the beaches. The whole island is an archaeological site, uninhabited, with the Terrace of the Lions, mosaics and a theatre, and it takes a morning with a guide. Boats leave from Mykonos old port and the crossing is thirty minutes. It is closed on Mondays, and the itinerary is arranged around that.
Santorini first, as written, because the ferry from Athens reaches it more directly and because ending on Mykonos gives you a beach finish and a short flight back to Athens for the journey home. The reverse works if your dates or the ferry timetable favour it, and the nights are the same either way.
For June to September, four to six months — caldera-view rooms on Santorini and the better beach hotels on Mykonos sell out early and their prices rise as they do. May and October are more flexible. Ferries open bookings a few months ahead and we reserve them as soon as the hotels are confirmed.
