Day-by-day itinerary
Met at Heathrow and driven into the city. A gentle first afternoon on the South Bank and Westminster Bridge, and dinner near the hotel. Overnight in London.
The Tower of London at opening, the river boat to Westminster, and a guided walk of Westminster Abbey's surroundings, Whitehall and Buckingham Palace — with the changing of the guard if the day allows. The sightseeing bus for the rest of the afternoon. Overnight in London.
A full day west: Windsor Castle and St George's Chapel in the morning, the stone circle at Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain after lunch, and the Georgian crescents and Roman baths of Bath in the late afternoon. Back to London in the evening. Overnight in London.
The British Museum, Covent Garden and the London Eye; Kensington's museums for families; Camden or Borough Market for lunch; and a West End show in the evening, which we can book. Overnight in London.
North from King's Cross up the east coast, with the sea beside the line beyond Newcastle, and into Edinburgh Waverley beneath the castle rock. The afternoon is the Royal Mile from the castle esplanade down to Holyrood, and the evening the closes and pubs of the Old Town. Overnight in Edinburgh.
Edinburgh Castle in the morning with entry included — the Crown of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny and the one o'clock gun — then a guided walk of the Old Town. The afternoon is Calton Hill for the view over the city to the sea, or the National Museum of Scotland, and Arthur's Seat for the energetic. Overnight in Edinburgh.
North and west by private car past Stirling and across Rannoch Moor into Glencoe, the most dramatic of the Highland glens, with time to walk beneath its peaks. On through Fort William at the foot of Ben Nevis and up the Great Glen to a lochside hotel, with a distillery on the way. Overnight in the Highlands.
Loch Ness along its whole length, with a boat on the water and Urquhart Castle on the shore, then Inverness, the Highland capital, and the battlefield at Culloden if you want the history. A last Highland evening by the loch. Overnight in the Highlands.
