Good to Know

Frequently asked

No. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are all Schengen members, so one Schengen visa covers the three-country route. Latvia has the most nights on this itinerary, so the application goes through the Latvian consulate; if there is no convenient appointment, your specialist will advise on the alternatives the rules allow. Allow six to eight weeks.
There are no direct flights; the usual connections are through Helsinki, Istanbul, Frankfurt or Warsaw into Tallinn, returning from Vilnius through the same hubs. Between the capitals the express coaches take about four and a half hours each on good roads, with reserved seats, Wi-Fi and a stop halfway; a flight takes under an hour. We book whichever suits your dates.
Three reasons: the old towns are as fine as any in Europe and far less crowded; hotels and meals cost roughly half of what they do in Paris or Zurich; and the pace is gentler — three cities, one visa, and no mountain of things you must see. It suits second or third trips to Europe, and travellers who found the classic route too busy. It is not the trip for a first visit, and we say so.
Easily at both ends. Helsinki is two hours from Tallinn by ferry, so the Baltics extend a Finland or Lapland trip naturally; Warsaw and Kraków are a train or a short flight from Vilnius. Both combinations exist as quotes on request rather than as fixed packages; tell us which end you would like to extend.
May to September. June and July have very long days and the old towns at their liveliest; late August and September are warm, quieter and cheaper. December brings Christmas markets in all three squares, with Tallinn's among the oldest in Europe, but the days are short and cold. March and April are the least appealing months.
