What drives the number Season moves price more than anything else — Christmas, New Year and the festival weeks carry a substantial premium, and the shoulder months are materially cheaper for the same route. Heritage and palace properties are the other main variable: India’s top hotels compete internationally on price, and a single night in one can equal three in a good mid-range hotel. We quote each journey individually rather than from a fixed price list, because the same itinerary changes cost significantly with the dates.

When to go

India has no single best season

Peak
Oct – Mar
October – March · the plains and the south

The reliable window for Delhi, Rajasthan, Agra, Varanasi, the temple south and the beaches. Dry, clear and warm by day, genuinely cold in the north in December and January. This is also peak pricing and peak crowding, and Christmas–New Year books out months ahead.

Mountains
Apr – Jun
April – June · the Himalaya opens as the plains close

The plains become severe — 40–45°C is normal — and this is precisely when the mountains are at their best. Ladakh, Spiti, Sikkim and the Uttarakhand valleys are accessible, roads are open and passes are clear. The hill stations exist because of this season.

Monsoon
Jun – Sep
June – September · the monsoon, and where it is an asset

The rain arrives in Kerala around the start of June and moves north over six weeks. Most travellers avoid it; some should seek it. Kerala’s Ayurvedic season is deliberately monsoon, the Western Ghats are at their greenest, and Ladakh sits in the rain shadow and stays dry. Coastal Goa and the hills are the places to avoid.

Plan ahead
Varies
Festival periods · a separate calendar

Diwali (Oct/Nov), Holi (Mar), Pushkar Camel Fair (Nov) and Durga Puja in Kolkata (Sep/Oct) move by the lunar calendar each year. They are extraordinary to witness and they distort availability and price for weeks around them. Decide early whether you are travelling for a festival or around one.

Why Live Traveller

Planning India with us

Researched, not resold

Every destination we offer is researched and vetted by our team before we recommend it.

Quoted in writing

Every journey is quoted individually and in writing before you commit, so you know what is included before you decide.

Designed around you

Each journey is a starting point. Dates, pace, stays and routing are reworked around how you actually want to travel.

Before you book

Do you need a visa or a permit?

Carry original government photo ID for every traveller including children: hotels are required to record it, domestic airlines will not board without it, and permit checkposts ask for the original rather than a photograph. Everything else below is geographic — parts of the Northeast, the high-altitude belt, both island groups and the national parks are permit-controlled, for conservation or because they sit near an international border.

How far ahead Inner Line Permits are days rather than weeks and several states issue them online. Ladakh and Sikkim high-altitude permits are arranged locally, typically the day before. Lakshadweep and Andaman island travel need longer and should be started before you book flights. Safari slots are the real constraint — at the popular reserves in peak season they are taken months ahead.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Ten days for one region, a fortnight for two, three weeks to add the Himalaya or the far south. India is a subcontinent and the most common planning mistake is trying to cross it — Delhi to Kochi is further than London to Athens. A first visit that covers one or two adjacent regions properly is far better than one that covers five badly.
There is no single answer, because the ideal month depends on the region. October to March suits the plains, Rajasthan, the temple south and the beaches; May to September is the season for Ladakh, Spiti and the Himalaya, which are closed or inaccessible in winter. When Rajasthan is at its best the mountains are under snow, and when Ladakh opens the plains are at 45°C. Choose the region first, then the month.
Yes, and slower than the map suggests. Indian Railways reaches almost everywhere, domestic flights are frequent and inexpensive, and a car with a driver costs a fraction of European equivalents. The adjustment is pace rather than availability: 250 km by road can take six hours, so build in one long transfer every three days rather than moving daily.
Fly anything over roughly 700 km, take the train between 300 and 700 km. Trains are better than flying where a Vande Bharat runs — Delhi–Varanasi, Mumbai–Ahmedabad, Chennai–Bengaluru are competitive once airport time is counted — and an overnight AC berth saves a hotel night. Fly when the leg crosses regions, such as Rajasthan to Kerala, which would otherwise consume a full day and a night.
Most international visitors do, and more than thirty nationalities can apply online for an e-Visa before travel in 30-day, one-year and five-year tourist categories. Apply through the official Government of India portal, which is widely imitated by paid intermediaries. Indian citizens need no visa domestically but should carry photo ID for every hotel, flight and train, and some regions require an Inner Line Permit regardless of nationality.
India is the best country in the world for vegetarian travel. Vegetarian is the default rather than a substitution, packaged food carries a green dot, and menus separate veg and non-veg outright. Jain food, prepared without root vegetables, is widely understood in western India. Vegans should say "no dairy" explicitly, because ghee, paneer and curd appear where a Western menu would not expect them.
River and backwater cruising is genuinely good; ocean cruising is limited. Kerala’s backwaters are the strongest proposition — a houseboat moving at walking pace through a hundred kilometres of connected waterway — and Ganges river cruises between Kolkata and Varanasi are a real and well-established option. Ocean cruising from Indian ports exists but is thin compared with the Mediterranean or Caribbean, and is better treated as a way to reach the Andamans or Lakshadweep than as a holiday in itself.
India is broadly safe for visitors who take normal precautions, with the usual caveats of any large, densely populated country. Petty theft and overcharging are the common problems rather than violence. Women travelling alone should take more care than in Western Europe, particularly at night and in less touristed areas; using pre-booked transport rather than hailing, and dressing conservatively, both help materially. Stomach upsets are the most likely thing to disrupt a trip — water and food discipline matter more than anything else.
